“You never could. I’m confident this will all work itself out.” He gripped her shoulder and squeezed.

She nodded and reached up, caressing his forearm, gripping his wrist, warmth and tenderness flooding her eyes. He bent down and gave her a soft kiss.

He took a quick breath, releasing the tension in his diaphragm. He didn’t want to wait another moment to ask her a question that would make him the luckiest and happiest man in the world. “I’ve got something—”

“You want to tell me? Um…I’ve already seen Granny and Hardass having lunch the other day. They looked pretty cozy.”

He felt like someone had just hit him upside the head with a brick. “What?”

“I know. I was surprised as hell too.”

He was going to have to stick that one on the back burner. He held up a bag.

“I need to ask you a question.”

“I’ll take the meatball sub,” she said, going back to her typing.

“Always with your stomach woman. We’re having a moment here.”

It must have been the tone of his voice. She turned and looked at him, then said, “All right.” She closed the laptop. “I’m all ears.”

He got down on one knee and her eyes widened. “Will you marry me, O?” He pulled a ring box out of the bag, and she groaned.

For a moment, he was thrown. Then she recovered and laughed softly. “Sorry. Yes, so many yeses!”

He opened the box and she gasped at the round diamond in a platinum setting. Her face softened and she cupped his cheeks. “It’s so beautiful.” She kissed him and he savored her mouth, then frowned.

“Why did you groan then?”

“Um, my mom wants to pay for the wedding. She wants to help.”

His turn to groan. She collapsed against him as he slipped the ring on her finger.

“Remember what I told you?”

“That I had commando skills?”

She grabbed his T-shirt and laughed softly. “I didn’t have the heart to tell you. She’s Superwoman and you don’t stand a chance.”

“Ah, so I need to practice my, ‘yes, ma’am.’”

She threw her head back and laughed. “Well, I think if you stealth her with all your charm, you’ll have her eating out of your hand just like me.”

“Uh-huh,” he said, “Now you’re just spinning up lies. We both know you’re as sassy as hell.”

“I can’t fool you. How about you let me handle her? After all, I am Superwoman’s daughter. I have the advantage of knowing her kryptonite.”

He grinned. “Oh, yeah? I can’t wait to hear this.”

She made a dramatic pause, then delivered her kicker. “Grandchildren.”

He chuckled and pulled her close, so in love with her. To liveinthe moment was vastly different than livingforit. To be truly present as life unfolded around them was to take the fullest advantage of being alive. There wasn’t anything they couldn’t do. They would love, laugh, go on missions together, watch each other’s sixes, and make a life out of the ashes of their past.

No doubt about it.
