He pulls the shirt on, and I see Noah’s right. It really doesn’t look any different.

I guess it also helps that it’s two sizes too big.

“Okay,” I tell him, looking over and seeing Rachel’s done with her conversation.

Her gaze connects with mine and she asks, “Is everyone ready to go home?”

The collective yes from everyone who’s in their human form gives her the answer.

We’re all ready for this thing to be over.

It’s time to go home.

Chapter Twenty-One

Guiltstartstoeatat me when I’m done binding their magic. I caused what happened here tonight. I did something impulsive and reckless, and that led to these bitches going after Amanda.

It can’t happen again. Especially now.

I just became a coven leader. That’s not a mantle to take on lightly, and it was something that felt right beyond the immediate need for the power it would bring us to put this situation to an end before it could turn ugly. I’m not even sure how Amanda feels about that.

I know Cheryl was pleased. It shocked her a little, maybe, but she wanted it.

Amanda, I’m not sure. She was hesitant. I know she worries about a lot of things. I shouldn’t have asked her to accept me as her leader under duress.

I look over and find her talking quietly with her Beta. Parker is tall and has an imposing energy, like most typical Betas. He doesn’t look all that pleased when I come toward them.

“Hey,” I start, wondering how exactly to begin.

It’s not an everyday conversation. I can’t pretend it is.

“I’m sorry, this was my fault,” I tell her.

She looks at Parker and he frowns, as if he knows what she’s going to say.

“Can you give us a minute?” she asks.

He scowls before he steps back. He doesn’t move too far. A few steps, and he pretends to look the other way, shooting irritable glances at me. Ugh. He blames me. They probably all do.

They should. This whole thing is on me.

“I never should have antagonised them…”

“Stop,” Amanda tells me. “You’ve got nothing to be sorry about. I know you think this is your fault, but they’re Dark Arts. Maybe this wouldn’t have happened like it did if you’d done something differently in class, but they would have found some other excuse.”

I find myself lost for words as I stare at her.

She smiles. “I didn’t know I wanted a coven, but all of this feels like it was fated. I’ve always been taught that my witch side should be ignored, and I always wished I could find a way to learn more about it. I got that wish when I came here, and you’ve helped me more than you know.”

I don’t quite get over my shock until she hugs me, and then it takes everything I’ve got not to start crying. She’s right. It does feel fated. I can’t believe I’m a coven leader now, and that I have two friends who trust me so much that they accept me to be in that place.

“Coven leaders look after their witches,” I tell her, as she steps back. “I promise I’ll always be there when you need me.”

“You’d better be,” Parker mutters.

“Don’t worry, I keep my promises.” I can’t let her down again. I won’t.
