“He’s exaggerating slightly,” I admit. “But I have a pre-existing appointment with our mate that you’re kind of ruining with this whole sympathy hug thing you’re doing.”

He laughs and Amanda smiles at him. He lets go, and she kisses him before she gets up.

He sits up and groans lightly. “Man, it’s warm in here.”

“At least it’s not hotter than hell,” I tell him.

He gets up and heads over to the fridge, stretching as he goes.

I watch carefully for a second before I nod at Parker.

“Yell if he starts to act weird.”

Parker scowls at me as I take Amanda’s hand and lead her into her room.

“And don’t wait up,” I tell him. “Or you’ll be waiting all night.”

I don’t feel quite so cocky once I’m in the room with my mate.

She turns and closes the door, and her sad smile makes my guts twist up.

It echoes the way she’s feeling; kind of melancholy but relieved at the same time.

The latter, I can understand. The former is what worries me.

“What is it? What’s wrong?” I ask, wondering if it’s something to do with whatever was on her mind earlier.

“Dante, you trust me, right?” she asks, a frown darkening her expression.

“Of course I do. You saved my life, Amanda. I love you,” I tell her.

“Will you talk to me about magic?” she asks, her tone uncertain.

Everything starts to click into place. She’s learning magic in class, and she doesn’t know how to do much. I’ve barely thought about my magic since I met my mates and joined this pack.

“I’ll tell you anything you want to know,” I assure her, taking her hand.

“Anything?” she asks, her voice softening.

“You’ve got some tough questions about it?”

“I know your past was hard,” she says, the frown coming back.

“It sucked, but it’s the past. I’m over it. I have a better life now. That’s kind of why I’ve been avoiding using magic,” I admit. “I pushed my wolf under to hide my Omega for the longest time. I set him free the night I met you and that changed my life. My warlock side never brought me anything this good.”

“I love both sides of you, Dante. I just haven’t really gotten to know the magic side of you very well.”

“Well, then, let me introduce him.” I teleport lit candles into the room, making a romantic atmosphere instantly. I add my CD player with one of our favorite band’s CDs playing on low.

Her eyes widen as she looks around. “I think you might be on Rachel’s level.”

I shrug. “There is a natural ability side to using magic. Some witches and warlocks are meant for charm weaving or potion spelling. Others can tap into almost anything for reserves, and that makes their options virtually limitless.”

“As long as they don’t go dark, right?” she asks.

“I’ve never practiced Dark Arts, but my magic has been used for that,” I admit, running a hand through my hair. My gaze drops at the admission. “I was fostered with Kelly and Roxy when we were younger. The couple who took us in were Dark Arts. They used us like magical batteries to replenish their own reserves or use us to summon demons without having to go to the bother of murdering an innocent. Torturing one is a worthy substitute, most of the time.”

“Oh, Dante. I’m so sorry.”
