Chapter Ten

Noah

SeeingmyAlphalookso determined reminds me of how things used to be back when we met.

Everett Hartnett was the scariest guy on campus. King of the Alphas. He ruled Lunar Academy. He knew what he wanted, and when he wanted it, and he could demand whatever the hell he wanted from whoever he wanted it from. Hell, he bankrolls that school with his inherited fortune.

He doesn’t need to study. He’s never needed to study.

Yet, I know why he feels like he needs to now.

Cheryl. Our mate. My Pretty Poison.

He wants to be more for her. He wants to be better.

I couldn’t believe it when he quit drinking and smoking to help Oscar do the same. He just stopped. Cold turkey. Oscar had a few stumbles. He’s more prone to addictions, being an Omega, but Everett didn’t falter. Until something happened with Oscar.

He went out this morning and bought cigarettes, which I got mad at him for. He smoked two in a row before Cheryl came out of the house and made him realize what he’d just done.

I’m glad that seems like a one-off slip-up now, but I hope Cheryl can get through to Oscar tonight.

We need to get to the bottom of whatever’s bothering him before those two completely ruin the honeymoon period we’ve been going through with our girl. I know Cheryl’s life wasn’t easy before she came here, and she got off to a rocky start at the academy. Things are good now, better than good, and I don’t want that to change.

My phone vibrates at the same time his does.

I raise an eyebrow as I take mine out of my pocket.

“Oscar,” I murmur.

Everett checks his and nods. “He’s telling us he wants to feed Cheryl tonight. Looks like dinner’s off the table before we head out.”

“It’s probably off the table for those two as well,” I mutter.

Home comes into view, and Everett sighs. “It’s only fair. They’d lose a couple hours together without dinner being part of their night.”

“Yeah, well. I’m remembering this when it’s my turn for a one-on-one,” I tell him.

“So am I,” he says, shooting me a wry smile. “I just want to see her before we go out. We can leave after that.”

“Cool. I need to change, though.” The academy uniform is the least comfortable thing I own.

He waves his hand. “Sure. Take your time.”

Everyone else will be home already. We leave together in the mornings, usually, but some classes finish early so we don’t always meet up at the gates.

We get inside and I head straight upstairs. There’s talking coming from the direction of the kitchen, so Everett goes that way. I pick up Cheryl’s scent on the stairs. The trail is fresh.

She’s not in the kitchen. I don’t yell for Everett. He’ll work it out soon enough.

I move quickly toward the main bedroom, where I find our mate in her underwear, checking through the dresser drawers. The red bra and panties are striking against her milky skin, and I find myself stopping to enjoy the view.

She stops rifling through her clothes to glance my way. I lift my gaze to her face.

“You wore red underwear for Oscar.”

She gives me a smile. Her lips are painted black like they are half of the time.

“I wear purple for you,” she tells me, “Oscar decided that was unfair. He wanted a color I wore just for him.”
