Chapter Nine

Everett

Mybrainfeelsfriedby the time classes are done for the day. I stuff my books into my backpack, letting relief flood over me that I can stop. I ignore the fact that this is a temporary reprieve. I need the chance to recover a little before I let Noah try even harder to get me up to speed.

“What’s the plan, exactly?” he asks as we file out of the classroom.

Damn. I guess we probably should organise this before we bump into our mate and our Omega.

Otherwise, I might decide that crashing their party is the better option.

“Dinner, first,” I tell him. “Then, we can leave and go to your room.”

“Where do we tell them we’re going?”

I discard the first thought that pops into my mind. A bar might have been the first place we always went to in the past, but it’s not an option now. I’d hate to think how Cheryl would look at me if I told her we were headed to a place that serves alcohol when it used to be Oscar’s main vice. The disappointment when she caught me with that cigarette this morning was bad enough.

“Bowling alley,” I tell him, finally thinking of a place that exists in town that doesn’t primarily serve booze. They serve warm beer and cheap sickly-sweet shots, but that’s not exactly my idea of temptation lying in wait. Call me spoiled, but I prefer not to get sick when I want to get drunk.

“The bowling alley. Seriously?” Noah asks, raising an eyebrow at me.

“Well, we could tell them we’re going for a run, but that would mean we’re staying close, and they might try to join us and find out we’re not where we said we’d be.”

“This is a bad idea,” he mutters.

“Look, we just say we’re giving them alone time, and we take off. They won’t ask where we’re going.”

He snorts. “Oscar willneedto know.”

“Oscar will be too busy thinking about what he’s going to do with Cheryl to care.”

My wolf growls the second those words slip out of my mouth. He doesn’t like the fact that our mate isn’t going to be close tonight. I haven’t spent a single night without her since we became mated and I don’t like the idea of it, either.

“It’s going to be weird,” Noah tells me. “We’ve been so used to sharing.”

“Don’t tell me you wouldn’t like time alone with her.”

“I hadn’t thought about it,” he admits, “but I wouldn’t say no.”

“Same.” In fact, I might insist on some one-on-one time after Oscar’s feeling better.

My wolf likes that idea. My mate hasn’t spent time alone with me in weeks.

I’ve haven’t felt so desperate for her touch since the day I first claimed her.

I can’t believe I’d been so damned determined to resist her. Witch or not, that woman owns my heart. I’d rip my own arm off if she asked me to, no questions asked.

That’s why I put the rest of the packet of cigarettes in a trashcan before we get home. I toss the lighter with the pack. I never want to see those big dark eyes fill with disappointment ever again.

Noah raises an eyebrow when I catch back up with him.

“You’re done again just like that?” he asks, a hint of relief in his tone.

I think back to all the times I tried to quit in the past. I never once threw them away. I always knew I’d change my mind. I nod. “Just like that.”

This time I have a reason to change. A real one.

I’d better not fuck it up.
