Cheryltakeshertimecoming back. I know she must have a good reason for that, but I start to get agitated when the kid starts playing the most annoying songs ever invented on the jukebox. I don’t remember adding any of that crap to the machine. Oscar must have added some extras when I wasn’t paying attention.

I stand up. “I’m going to find Cheryl.”

Noah nods. “She’s still out front with Rachel.”

I see that when I look out the window. It’s still light outside. They’re standing just outside the gates.

“We’ll be back in a minute.” Translation, I’m not coming back without her.

“Sure,” Noah says, clearly amused.

He knows I won’t be back unless she’s with me.

Social crap like this is a nightmare. They seem nice enough, but even on a good day I’d have a hard time playing the gracious host. I’m not built for it. I don’t know how to make small talk.

So, I head out to where my mate is standing with her best friend at the gates of our home.

Cheryl turns when I stop next to her, leaning on the gates.

“Hey,” she says.

“Hey,” I echo back. “What’s happening?”

“We’re waiting on Silas calling back. He’s trying to get in contact with Bianca’s ghost,” Cheryl tells me. “Rachel asked if Oscar might have been possessed. If that’s what happened, then that girl’s death wasn’t his fault.”

“Possessed?” I ask.

“Possession can cause blackouts,” Rachel tells me.

“So, Silas is going to ask Bianca if she possessed Oscar? As if she’s not a lying piece of shit?”

“She wanted Oscar’s help for something. He’s going to tell her we’ll only consider it if she helps us. Hopefully that’ll be enough to persuade her to be honest,” Cheryl says, shrugging.

“If it’s not, we can tell Mabel we think she possessed him anyway and she’ll have to check into it,” Rachel adds. “Oh, I’m getting a call.”

She brings her phone out of her pocket and puts it on speaker. “Silas, what happened?”

“Your ghost friend is charming,” he says, sounding as impressed as I feel.

“What did she say?” Cheryl asks.

“She wants help to move on. That’s why she was talking to Oscar in his dreams. She’s been hanging around all of you since she died, trying to get someone’s attention. She said she never possessed anyone. She doesn’t know how. She thought the dream thing was a fluke until she managed to do it twice.”

“You’re sure?” Rachel asks.

“When I told her we’d only help her if she helped Oscar, she said you guys owed her for killing her and she called him a lost cause. She said she saw him kill that girl in the woods before she tried to get back into his dreams. That’s how she knew what happened when he didn’t.”

Cheryl looks devastated. She really thought this was the answer.

“She’s a lying bitch,” I tell them. “We can’t trust a word she says.”

“I don’t think she has the first clue how to possess someone,” Silas says. “I tested her with commands and the best she could do was cause a cool breeze and move a wind chime a little bit. She’s mouthy as hell and I believe she’s a liar, but not on that point, unfortunately.”

Rachel closes her eyes. She opens them again a second later.

“We’ll still need Oscar watched over if Mabel decides he can still go with the other pack’s Alpha. Is she willing to go with him and tell you if he’s in trouble? We’ll help her if she does that.”
