But there will be later, if we don’t make sure there isn’t.

It’s only instinct, but I’ve learned to trust mine since my shifter side became known. This guy isn’t interested in keeping Oscar. He plans to sell him. To whom, or for what reason, I don’t know, but I know that’s what he’s planning.

Georgia’s story might have been meant to ensure our help, but I don’t think it was faked.

Rachel didn’t, either. That town had a strange vibe. She felt it, and Noah did too.

“Don’t you have any things?” Liam Mercer asks Oscar. “I thought Omegas were clingy about their stuff.”

Oscar shrugs. “It’s not like I’m loaded because I live in a mansion. That’s Everett’s house.”

“You’re ready?” Mabel asks.

“I guess,” Oscar tells her.

He doesn’t say goodbye. He already did that.

“You can go,” Mabel tells the other pack.

They walk away with Oscar, and he doesn’t look back.

I close my eyes, and Everett puts his arm around me.

“It’s going to be okay,” he murmurs. “We’ll get him back.”

Chapter Seventy-Seven

Noah

Istandbythewindow in the lounge, watching the Alpha and his Betas wait outside our gates. The room’s been quiet since the kid went to sleep. His mother came and lifted him out of the room after she spoke to the witch. Told us she was to get him settled in a room upstairs.

Considering he’d been passed out cold for a while it sounded like a good idea.

I’d asked if she needed help finding a room, wondering at Everett telling her to do that without providing an escort. She’d told me Vi had offered to show her a room near theirs. Made sense.

It would be better for the kid to be closer to them. There’s no way in hell Everett would put them anywhere near us. The lock on our bedroom door is probably going to be used way more often now that there’s a kid around.

I got bored of sitting around and took my spot by the window after Georgia took the kid to bed, and after Ivy decided to clean up the kitchen while she waited for Vi and Georgia to get back.

I check the time and start to wonder if we’ve found a way out of this mess. We tried everything. Something had to stick. I start to feel a bit weird, like my stomach is empty. It’s not true. I did eventually give up pretending the cakes looked gross.

I snuck one from the kitchen when no one was looking. It tasted even better than it looked.

I ignore the feeling and keep watch, hoping against hope that one of Cheryl’s plans worked out.

I straighten when I suddenly see Oscar, then Everett, Cheryl and Mabel moving toward the gates.

Rachel darts back into the room at the same time.

“It’s happening,” she says, as she spots me by the window and moves to my side.

I watch carefully, stepping back a little to let her see what’s going on out there.

My shoulders tense just watching them.

There’s some talking, most of it by the witch.

Then, they start to disband. Oh shit. Oscar’s being taken away.
