I step into the kitchen where Rachel’s talking to Noah.

I splash water on my face at the sink before I grab a towel and sit down next to my mate.

The towel comes away from my face pink in places, red in others. I wince at the mess as I clean it off my skin. I seriously need a shower.

“What did the council say?” I ask Rachel.

“They’re sending someone to Mercer’s house to confirm his death,” she says. “They’ll assess the town and decide if anyone there needs to be rehabilitated before they can be reintegrated into shifter society. I think they’ll have a lot of angry males on their hands, like that creepy Beta.”

“Once they’re done, I’m guessing we might have some new pack members on our hands?” Noah asks, looking to me for the answer.

“Maybe,” I tell him. “I think we should be careful about who we accept.”

“Georgia was scared,” Rachel reminds me, knowing where my thoughts are. “She might feel differently now that Mercer’s dead.”

I forgot about Georgia. The plan was to bring her back here, but after what happened with Everett that little detail dropped out of my thoughts.

“I’ll go with my instincts,” I decide. “And so will Everett. If we don’t think we can trust someone we can’t let them in. We need to protect what we already have. That’s the bottom line.”

“How’s Oscar?” Rachel asks.

“He’s talking to his mom right now. He wants to find his half-siblings.”

“I don’t know how I’d feel in his shoes,” she says, shaking her head. “That’s not going to be an easy task. Who knows what kind of people buy other people? That’s so messed up.”

She has a point. Finding Oscar’s siblings isn’t going to be easy, and it could break his heart.

“He’s determined,” I tell her. “I want to help him.”

“I hope we can find them,” Noah says, taking my hand in his.

The sound of the doorbell makes all of us jump in our seats.

It’s late, and none of us were expecting it.

I get up and they follow. Oscar’s already at the door when I step into the hall.

Everett’s standing at the top of the stairs, glowering suspiciously at the door.

“Don’t answer that,” Everett snaps as he darts down the stairs.

Oscar’s already opening it. I rush to get to his side, Everett doing the same.

A wash of white light spills into the house, blindingly bright.

It dies down a second later, and I blink until I can see who’s standing there.

Mabel Waters, glowing like she’s an angel sent from heaven. All she’s missing is a halo.

“Well,” she says as we step back to let her into the house, still glowing with heavenly light. “I can see you have your Omega back, and it’s certain now that he didn’t kill that girl.”

“Tell us something we don’t know,” I say.

“The Fates owe you a favor,” she says, giving me a wry smile.

“Um, what?” I ask.

“Their past projection wasn’t fool-proof,” she states. “We’re going to have to add in some additional perimeters to make sure this kind of thing can’t happen again. They admit their fault.”
