“Let’s go around back,” Everett says, leading us that way.

I say bye to the witch, and she waves as we leave.

“Georgia ran away,” Everett tells us in a quiet voice. “I don’t think she’s coming back for Leo.”

“His mom ran away? From him?” It doesn’t make sense.

Cheryl lets out a sad sigh. “She’s been through a lot. She might change her mind and come back for him when she realizes what she’s doing.”

“He’s my little brother. I’ll look after him.”

Even if she comes back. Running away like this means she’s not stable. I won’t let her just show up again and take him away. I need to protect him, and I will.

We get to the back of the house where another witch spots us and walks over.

I look past her curiously at the two teenagers standing around near the lawn furniture.

They’re both tall blondes. The guy looks like he works out, though he’s not as big as Everett.

The girl is slim, and paces around like she’s not used to staying still.

The witch talks to Cheryl and Everett while I walk closer to the Betas.

I can’t help the smile that twitches my lips at the familiar tingles come over me the minute I see them. These guys are meant for our pack. There’s no question.

“Hey,” I greet them.

The girl stops pacing and they both look at me suspiciously.

They’re both tired. They’ve probably been waiting around for hours.

The girl is anxious, and the guy is hopeful.

“Who are you?” the girl asks.

I smile at her. “I’m from the Hartnett-Dartmore pack. I’ve heard you want to join us.”

They look at each other, and back at me again.

“You’re their Omega,” the girl says. “Mercer’s long-lost kid.”

“Oscar,” I tell her. “And you are?”

“Jennifer,” she says. “The rock standing beside me is James. You’d have more luck getting conversation out of a stone, so I always make the introductions.”

James frowns at her, but he doesn’t say anything.

“I promise he’s not actually mute. He just prefers to talk with his fists, to bad guys, of course.”

I smile at her and she smiles back.

“We used to look after Leo sometimes,” she adds. “He’s a cute kid.”

“I’m sure he’ll love to see you again.”

She raises an eyebrow at me. “Are you saying we’re in? We haven’t even met your Alphas yet.”

“They trust my instincts.” Well, usually. Everett ignored them when Cheryl showed up but look how that turned out.
