I wrest control from my wolf as she growls again, more loudly this time.

I shift back to my human form to witness the full horror of the scene in front of me.

“Oscar!” I cry out, dropping to my knees at his side.

My mate is unconscious on the ground, covered in blood. I can see his chest rise and fall, and I can’t find a wound to explain the bleeding. I check his pulse and his heart rate seems steady. I take his hand in mine. It’s warm.

Confusion fills me, and my gaze moves up from my mate. That’s when I realize he’s not lying here alone. There’s another person close to his other side, in the same state of undress and covered in the same dark stains. No. That’s not right. They’re not exactly the same.

Hers are darker. She’s wounded.

My mate isn’t hurt. He’s breathing. His heart rate is steady.

The blood covering part of his face and his chest doesn’t belong to him.

It’s hers. I move closer to her to confirm my suspicions. I can see the wound glistening in the darkness when I move from Oscar’s side to hers. She isn’t just hurt. She’s dead.

Her throat’s been torn out. She’s soaked in blood. She’s been killed by a wolf.

“Oh, Goddess,” I whisper, as I move back to Oscar’s side.

I don’t get another moment to process my discovery. My attention is captured by a sudden intrusion of sound and movement. The panicked sounds of two people talking as they rush toward what one of them just found, the movements of their bodies casting distant shadows.

Instinct takes over as I see the impending threat on the horizon.

I take Oscar’s hand. I don’t have time to haul him through the woods, but I can teleport us back to the mansion before those strangers get to where we are.

I don’t know what happened here, but I’m not about to let anyone hurt my mate.

Oscar’s mine to protect. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep him safe.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Oscar

Bianca’ssmugsmilewon’tdie. I can’t believe she’s in my dreams again. The bitch always wanted to be somebody. I seriously doubt that somebody was the next best thing to Freddy Krueger which is what she’s turning into.

“You should have listened to me. I could have helped you,” she goes on in a told-you-so tone.

“Yeah, well. Would have, could have, should have,” I mutter, wondering where the forest went.

It was here a second ago. All dark and deep and lovely.

My history classroom is the way it was earlier. Everyone frozen in place save for the two of us.

This is definitely a nightmare. All Bianca needs is a melted face and a fist full of razor blades.

Then, this thing would be complete.

She frowns at me. “You do know what you just did, right?”

What I just did? Only a half dozen unmentionable things with my mate. Things this bitch has no business knowing about let alone trying to make me feel weird over.

“Get a life, Bianca. Oh wait. You can’t.”

“You really don’t know,” she murmurs, shaking her head. “Wow. How fucked up are you?”

I walk around, looking for the exit to the woods. It showed up before when I needed it. Where the hell is it now? I’d much rather be tortured through a full moon shift right now than listen to another word that falls out of this bitch’s mouth.
