She gets to her feet, and I see she’s wearing one of my T-shirts. It drowns her a little, but it’s her usual choice for sleepwear.

Her face is make-up free which is normal for night-time, but I get the distinct impression this was earned by a shift, rather than by her usual skincare routine.

“What happened?” I ask quietly, when I get to the top of the stairs.

She shakes her head and presses her lips together briefly before she speaks.

“Oscar shifted and left the house while I was sleeping. I found him out in the woods, covered in blood that wasn’t his. There was a dead girl, and I could hear people nearby, coming closer. Shifters. I teleported us back here before they could get to us.”

It’s almost too much to take in. I lose my ability to speak as I stare at her.

“Wait. There was a dead girl?” Noah asks, as he stops at my side and passes me my keys.

She nods. “A shifter. Oscar was covered in her blood, but it looked staged. I’m sure that’s what it was. He didn’t have any blood in his mouth or under his nails. It was all just around his mouth and chest.” Her breathing starts to hitch. “He didn’t hurt her. He couldn’t have.”

“I know,” I tell her, reassuring my mate that she’s right.

It’s what she needs to hear, and under normal circumstances I might completely agree with her.

Oscar would never knowingly hurt anyone, but the truth is he’s not connected to his wolf and there are missing pieces to the puzzle. All shifters have the ability to kill. It would be foolish to pretend he’s any different because he’s an Omega and softer natured. Omega’s can kill. They have killed.

He could do the same, in the right situation.

Whether he did it or not, changes nothing.

I’m more concerned about the invasion of our territory by an unknown pack.

Cheryl takes a deep breath, and she looks more determined now, less shaken.

“Someone did this to Oscar. We need to find out who.”

I nod as I pull her into my arms. I can agree with that. I don’t who’s out there, but they’re going to regret coming onto my land and disturbing my pack.

Chapter Thirty-One

Cheryl

EverettthinksI’velostmy mind. He’s keeping his mouth shut, but I could see it on his face when I told him what happened. He hugged me after, and he’s been quiet, but I know there’s something he isn’t saying. I pull back from the hug, and I look into his dark blue eyes.

He can’t possibly think Oscar killed someone. He knows his Omega as well as I do.

“Where’s the body?” he asks.

“It’s not far,” I tell him. “There’ll be a scent trail you can follow, but it’s been… I don’t know how long. I cleaned Oscar up once I got him back here, and he was freaking out once he woke up. It took a while to calm him. He passed out after that and that’s when I called you.”

Everett nods. “I need to see what we’re dealing with. Stay with Oscar. Both of you.”

I shake my head. “There were other shifters out there, Everett. I don’t know who they were. You can’t go out there alone.”

That gets his back up instantly. His wolf growls.

“This is my land, my territory. Anyone in these woods uninvited is trespassing.”

Pack law dictates we can deal with trespassing shifters with lethal force. We’re in no trouble with the supernatural community over whatever happened out there tonight.

Any reputable pack would know better.

These people could be extremely dangerous.
