I gently roll her onto her side, getting her away from the edge of the bed.

I take sheets out of the closet and put them over her.

Then, I climb into bed beside her and tug her closer to the middle of the Super King mattress.

I hold her close and watch her sleep.

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Noah

Ileavethekitchen, intending to check on our mate. She seemed worn out, and after the night she had I don’t blame her. I don’t know how I would have coped if I’d found our Omega in the woods with a dead body by his side. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to get him home as quickly as she had, and I doubt I could have found the words to deny what the other pack claimed when their Alpha arrived.

I find myself gravitating toward the open door to the lounge, instead of the staircase.

It seems likely that Cheryl’s resting right now. I decide not to disturb her.

I step into the room that belonged to the three of us long before Cheryl came into our lives.

We spent so many hours in here. Lying around on the leather sofas, drinking whatever cocktails Oscar decided to make, and talking about everything and nothing.

I stand inside and realize it’s just a room now.

It looks the same, but it’s not. The bar’s been emptied of alcohol, and the jukebox has been unplugged. It was designed for parties, and those happened frequently enough to mean the bar had to be restocked every other week, but more than that it was where our pack formed, where we started to talk about what the future would look like. What our pack would look like.

We thought we had choices to make, mates to pick out from the new arrivals every semester.

We had no idea our true mate would come crashing into our lives when we needed her most, somehow bringing everything we wanted in one incredible hybrid witch-wolf woman.

Sharing a mate wasn’t something any of us had considered before we met Cheryl.

I don’t think it would have worked with any other woman on the planet.

She’s the only one that was made for us. The only one we were meant for.

She’s our destiny, and none of us will ever deny that.

The plans made in this room were nothing more than flights of fancy borne out of boredom while we waited for her to come into our lives. I don’t remember the details of any of them now.

The floorboards creak behind me, and I turn to see Everett standing in the doorway.

“Feels weird being in here again, doesn’t it?”

I nod, though it feels more like a statement than a question.

He leans against the doorframe. “All we ever used to do in here was talk about leaving town.”

“That was before,” I remind him, wondering if he’s thinking about it again.

He smiles. “Everything was before, and all of it was shit.”

He’s not wrong. Everything was falling apart before Cheryl got here. She pulled us back together. She made everything better. We’re whole with her at the centre of our lives.

“It’s better now,” I say.

“It is,” he admits. “But Oscar’s not okay.”

“He seemed better at breakfast.” Actually, he perked up after Everett explained what had happened with the Alpha, that Cheryl had found a way to prove him innocent of their charges and that we’d be rid of the problem tomorrow morning after the Alpha came back with an impartial witch to cast the spell.
