“Oscar,” I breathe out, shaking my head.

“No,” Everett whispers beside me.

“Oh my God,” Noah murmurs.

We’re about to lose Oscar to this pack of strangers.

Whatever their plan is, it got them what they wanted.

Chapter Fifty

Oscar

Itfeelslikeadream. Maybe because I’ve had so many of those lately, so many that felt real.

I know my pack still want to fight, but the witch stated it clearly. I’m guilty of killing that girl.

We all watched it happen. There’s no dispute to be made.

I did something terrible, something I can’t take back.

“This is crazy. He didn’t do this,” Everett speaks, breaking me out of my thoughts.

The witch who cast the spell sighs. “The evidence is crystal clear.”

“Something must be wrong,” Cheryl argues. “Can’t you recast? To be sure.”

My mate is determined to prove I didn’t do this, even when it’s beyond obvious that I did.

The faith my pack have in me is unfounded. I don’t deserve their unwavering support.

I clear my throat. “I have blackouts when I shift form. I don’t remember what happened, but I believe my wolf killed this girl. I might never know why, but this is my fault for not dealing with a problem I kept having. I knew… I knew something bad could happen. I ignored that and this is the result.”

Fuck. It hurts to admit it out loud.

The stunned silence I get in response only deepens the pain. Cheryl and Everett have nothing left to say. No refusals left to make. No more denials about what we just witnessed.

This is it. I did it. Now, I need to pay the price.

The witch turns to the pack I hurt with my actions.

“It’s your decision on how to proceed.”

The Alpha has been quiet. He has sympathy in his gaze, but it’s for show. His emotions are calm, and his actions are measured. He’s not upset, and he doesn’t care that this has gutted my pack.

“We’d like to replace the pack member we lost,” he says. He looks past the witch to hold Cheryl’s furious stare. “No harm will come to him, but all bonds to your pack must be broken, and he must accept his new Alpha’s mark willingly.”

I can feel the rage that spills over Everett and Cheryl at this suggestion.

It’s the best outcome we could have hoped for, yet it’s impossible to accept.

“He’s not okay,” Cheryl says sharply. “We can’t give him up while he’s still blacking out.”

“As his Alphas, that would typically be seen as irresponsible,” the witch murmurs, as if she’s considering it.

Fuck. If I’m earned some kind of reprieve, it’ll only make this harder.

I’ll still have to break my bonds and become part of this unknown pack.
