I can’t help smiling. “I feel the same way, minus the angry.”

She rolls her eyes at me, but she does also smile, for a fraction of a second.

“Okay, now be quiet so I can make sure there aren’t more surprises in this corridor.”

I stay quiet, very aware now of any potential threats we pass.

I stop at any windows with loose glass, punching it out with my elbow so it’ll fall to the ground outside. There’s no way to banish the spirits since they’re trapped here so we’re just going to have to be super careful.

“This is it,” she tells me, pointing out the closed door.

I stop outside it, realizing she’s about to step through and leave me to open the door.

My heart is hammering as I turn the handle.

I’m about to meet my father.

Holy fucking shit.

Chapter Sixty-One

Rachel

EverythingiswrongwhenI wake up. I remember being dragged inside the house, but that’s not where I am when I open my eyes. I’m back in that cabin in the woods. The one Paul took me to.

I can’t move. My magic is bound. I’m even wearing the clothes I wore that day.

I close my eyes and take in a deep breath.

I’m still passed out.

That’s the only reasonable explanation. It’s the only answer that makes a damn bit of sense.

I can hear him in the room, moving around. Whistling.

Behaving like the psychopath I didn’t realize he was.

Pretending to still be asleep was all I could do while I waited to be able to move.

He knew it, and he needled me, trying to get me to show I was really awake.

Sheer stubborn determination to get out of this fucked up situation let me hold it together.

He wouldn’t break me. I was going to break him.

“But that’s not what happened, Rachel, is it?” Paul asks.

Oh my Goddess. This is more than a memory.

Something else is happening here, and I don’t know what the hell it is.

“No,” he says, sounding as superior as ever. “You held on for a bit, which is admirable, really. But you didn’t quite make it, did you? One of those wolves had to stop me. Had to save you. Otherwise, you would have died, and I would have lived. The way it was meant to be.”

No. It happened how it was meant to be.That can’t be disputed.

Fate brought me to a place where I’d meet my pack, and where they’d save my life.

“Seriously, Rachel?” he asks, letting out a despairing sigh. “Well, it doesn’t matter now. Not really. Because I’m here to correct fate’s mistake.”
