Page 119 of Shifting Spirits

It’s just a room. A plain old, empty room in a creepy as fuck house full of ghosts.

“Thank Apollo,” I utter, moving toward a small window at the back of the room.

I peer outside. It’s still stormy out there. Rain’s pelting the glass as if it’s trying to break the window open. I can hear the wind howling and the clouds rumbling with thunder.

The view is pretty grim. There’s a cemetery beyond the back of the property. An old one, with broken gravestones and overgrown grass.

Okay. I’m at the back of the house, and that thing out there with Rachel’s face is probably a ghost.

And not a normal ghost.A demonic spirit.

Holy fucking shit. That bitch is a demon.

They can make themselves solid when it suits their purposes, and from what I remember from a discussion with Silas, they can create illusions.

“Designed to trap their prey and drain their lifeforce,” I remember with a shiver.

I fell for it, looping like crazy. That’s probably why the illusion spread so damn far. I let it. I did what the spirit expected me to do. If I hadn’t forced myself to get a grip, she’d be halfway to draining the life out of me now.Fuck knows what that would mean for me.

“Adrian!” she calls out, clearly enjoying stalking me. “Come out, come out, wherever you are!”

I escaped the illusion. I’m in a room where it doesn’t exist.

She can’t get to me in here, but I don’t have an exit, either.

I need to find Rachel and Silas.

I can’t let this happen to them.

“Adrian …” she sings, from right on the other side of the door. “I know you’re in there. We have unfinished business to attend to.”

I partially shift, sharpening my claws and fangs.

If she’s solid, she can be injured.

It might not do much to her, but all I need is a temporary distraction.

It’ll be enough to let me run until the forest illusion has stopped spreading.

I need to get through this nightmare to haul my mate and my Beta out of theirs.

“You can’t come in,” I call back. “Step away from the door, and I’ll come out.”

She opens the door, letting it swing inward.

The forest trails into the entrance a little, before it whips back as if it’s been burned.

“Well, that isn’t very welcoming of you,” she says, blocking the doorway.

“I’m only welcoming to my mate, and you’re not her.”

“I told you already. I could be. I could be everything you’ll ever need.”

“For what, five seconds until I’m a corpse?”

She laughs. “Don’t be silly. We would have hours together until you succumbed. Shifters always take so much longer than humans do to die. It’s what I love about them.”

I move closer, knowing I have a choice. I won’t verbally accept what she offers, and I won’t get stuck in another loop. All I need is to get close enough to hurt her.
