“I think the other one that was here is gone. We should look for Rachel. I’ll call Sara. See if she can tell us where Rachel is.”

He nods, looking out of the doorway, as if he’s paranoid about those rogue poltergeists.

“We’ll need to go into the hallway,” I tell him.

“Okay,” he says. “But if you were trapped in that room, you might get a shock when you go out there.”

I realize what he means once we step out of the room.

The hallway looks like our hallway at home.

“The illusion got bigger while I was trapped in there.”

Kind of crazy. I thought that happened when there was active participation, not because of how many times the poltergeists cycled through their illusion. I guess you learn something new every day.

“The forest did too. The middle of the house with the staircase was clear.”

“That’s probably the way we should head once I’ve spoken to Sara, then.”

“Right,” he says, nodding. He stands around waiting for me to call on her.

I call her and she appears in front of us, looking pissed off.

“I can’t believe you chickened out,” she blurts, frowning at me.

“I didn’t,” I tell her. “There was a teleport over the doorway. It brought me up here, where a demon made an illusion to try and kill me.”

Her mouth drops open. She stares at the out of place hallway and I motion to the room we stepped out of. “The demon’s in there.”

She moves through the wall and Adrian’s eyebrows jump as she gasps.

She steps back into the hallway and shakes her head. “Well, that’s just crazy.”

“Welcome to my life,” I tell her. “We need to find Rachel. Can you help?”

“Sure,” she says. “Give me a sec and I’ll go look.”

I blink and she’s gone.

“So, that was your sister, huh?” Adrian asks. “Nice of you to introduce me.”

He saw her. He can see ghosts in here. This house must be spelled for that. It would have to be, to let the poltergeists mess with anyone who isn’t a medium or a necromancer.

“Sorry. I wasn’t thinking since it’s usually only me who can see them.”

Sara comes back. “Okay, she’s on the floor below this one in the corridor, but we should hurry.”

“Hurry? Why? What’s happening?”

“She thinks she’s with you two already. Clearly, she’s not.”

“Shit,” Adrian utters, before he darts away, heading for that staircase he told me about.

I stumble over my feet to follow him, chasing through a corridor that looks like our living room before we get to the stairs.

“Slow down,” I call after him.

“No fucking way,” he calls back.
