“What is it?” Rachel asks, starting to frown.

“The Dark Lord. He might show an interest in you now that you’ve shown you’re not afraid of him.”

Oh, fuck.

“An interest?” Adrian asks, his voice getting a bit growly. “What kind of interest?”

“Temptations as unexpected gifts,” she says. “He might try to make you crave something so badly that you’ll make a deal with him to have more of it.”

“Um, would giving me the abilities of an Omega for the night be one of those gifts?”

The witch blinks at Rachel. “You were able to heal by touch?”

“I was able to feel everyone else’s feelings. In a good way.”

She nods. “That sounds like his M.O.”

Shit. He put a temptation under our noses, and we didn’t even notice it.

“I didn’t accept any gift,” Rachel says. “It just happened. I had no control over it.”

“That’s how he works, I’m afraid. He doesn’t care about consent. He cares about exerting power, and he has it. He let you live, and that is rare. We should have known what it might mean.”

“What are we supposed to do about this?” Adrian asks, not willing to accept it.

“You’re supposed to get on with your life. Don’t dwell on it. Just, watch out for temptation and don’t make deals with strangers. In fact, it’s better if you erase that word from your vocabularies. He walks the earth in human disguise often, and it’s not always obvious, even to those who can sense magic.”

“If we do that, he can’t trick us, right?” Rachel asks.

“He’ll try and he’ll try. That’s the part he seems to love. He doesn’t mind if it takes forever, but he doesn’t ever stop trying. I’m sorry, Rachel. I wish this hadn’t happened.”

“That’s okay,” Rachel says. “We’ll figure out a way to beat him.”

She sounds determined. I have no doubt about that.

The witch smiles. “You didn’t think you were an Omega, did you?”

Rachel laughs. “Not really.”

Our mate is closer to being an Alpha, than an Omega. It was exciting that she could feel what we were feeling, but when I thought about it for longer than that, it didn’t make sense.

“So, you’ll be able to tell if something like that happens again. It might never. He might forget all about you. He is rather fickle.”

As terrifying as it is that the ruler of hell has his sights set on our girl, I know she won’t let him catch her. And if she does, we won’t let him keep her. There’s no way he’s taking our mate from us.

Chapter Eighty-Four

Rachel

Mabelleaves, andAdrianlocks the door behind her. I can tell by the look in his eyes that he’s ready to keep me locked up tight for the rest of our lives if that’s what it’ll take to keep me safe.

“We’re alive,” I tell him. “And we’re mated, and we’re happy.”

“I think you were more nervous about Paul’s parents than you are about the ruler of hell.”

I shrug. “I’m not worried about either. All we have to do is be careful. You’re very good at being careful, Adrian. I know we don’t need to worry about this.”

“She’s right,” Carter adds. “We’ll figure something out. We always do.”
