Silas is being quiet, but he nods.

Adrian sighs. “It feels less Christmassy now, but since you gave me your present last night, yours is in here.”

He walks over to the door by the stairs that we never open. Silas’ aunt’s study.

“I wanted to give you your own room in the house, and Silas said you wouldn’t want a bedroom, but I thought you could use a place to mix your charms and do magic stuff.”

I step into the room as he turns on the overhead lighting.

There’s a desk, and a ton of storage space, and a bunch of my supplies have been put here and added to. I smile at him. “Thank you, it’s perfect.”

Carter and Silas slip into the room as Adrian hugs me.

“I just need to clear out this drawer,” Silas says. “I kind of forgot about it until recently.”

He goes over to a dresser and opens the drawer, pulls out a pile of letters.

“Turns out my aunt hid these from me when I was a kid,” he says. “So, I wouldn’t know my father.”

“Oh, Goddess. Silas, that’s awful.”

“I know. She was awful, but I have my father now. I want to get to know him better.”

Of course. I would feel exactly the same way, except it’s not how I feel about my parents.

“I think I need to go tell my parents the truth,” I tell them.

It’s been six months. I wasn’t sure I was ready before. I know I am now.

Chapter Eighty-Five

Rachel

OneDayLater

I magic up gift bags for the piles of soft toys that I left in Silas’ room on Christmas morning. I forgot about taking them to the orphanage and I want to go do that before we take a trip to Midnight Valley. This time we’ll be teleporting there and walking around to get Silas’ car to drive home.

Despite being told the Dark Lord is going to try and tempt me into making a deal, I’m the happiest I’ve even been in my life. I’m glad Mabel warned me, because it meant we could prepare.

I’ve warded the house against dark magic, and demonic spirits. Really, those should have been obvious wards to have. Most earth witches have basic protections around their house. Now, I have those same protections.

I’m wearing a pendant that wards against them, too, and I’ve given my mates the same in bracelet version for Silas and Adrian, and wrist cuffs for Carter.

It’ll be pretty hard for the devil to get at us while we’re protected.

“Need help?” Carter asks, stepping into Silas’ room and sitting on the bed.

“Can you put a couple of these in every bag?” I ask.

“Sure. You won all of this at the arcade?” he sounds impressed.

“Don’t be too impressed. I’m pretty sure we overpaid for them, with the amount of quarters we went through.”

“Right, but I’ve done the same and never won a thing. You need to teach me to use those machines.”

“D …” I cut myself off and smile. “That word we’re not allowed to use anymore.”

“Maybe you should spell us so we can’t say it,” he suggests, as he starts stuffing toys into bags.
