She looks surprised. “Oh. Um. I don’t think I’ve ever been asked that question.”

I take a pen and pad from my purse and write down my name and number.

“Well, think about it and let me know. I’m still in school, but I’d like to help out, if it’s possible.”

“Were you an orphan?” she asks.

“Sometimes, it kind of felt like it, but no. I have parents. They just never had a lot of time for kid stuff while I was growing up.”

“Thank you so much for the kind donations. I’m sure they’ll enjoy having something new to play with. You did bring rather a lot. We only have fifteen children.”

“Well, just give them two each.”

“I’ll let you know about the job.”

“I appreciate it. Thanks.”

I leave the building, and my mates are waiting for me in the yard.

“All done,” I tell them. “Flower shop, next?”

Silas nods. “It’s the local cemetery and the shop’s on the way over.”

It’s a bright day for a walk and being outside feels good after spending so much time indoors this past week or so. It’s the perfect time to tell my parents everything. I know nothing they can say to me will bring me down. I can walk away from them with my head held high.

I don’t think I could have done that before.

We wait outside the flower shop for Silas, and when he comes out with the biggest bunch of pink roses that I’ve ever seen, he shrugs and says, “Go big, or go home.”

I kind of did the same thing with the orphanage gifts so I’m not going to complain.

We make the walk to the cemetery, going in through the gates and following Silas as he leads us to the plot number the ghost in his father’s garden gave him.

He kneels down by the grave when we get there.

“Samantha Madden,” he reads out loud. “Beloved wife and mother.”

He drops the roses. I kneel down beside him.

“She’s your grandmother.”

He nods. “The women in this family have a weird reluctance to give out their names.”

I start arranging the roses he dropped, and he shakes his head before he starts doing the same.

“Do you think I’ll get to meet her?” I ask.

“I think she’s not going anywhere,” he says.

“Then, I’ll ask Kelly for a charm.”

He smiles. “That would be nice.”

We sit there for a bit, until Silas is ready to leave. He takes off his skull charm but she’s not around. A dozen other spirits are, apparently, but he shakes his head.

“I’ll come back in a day or two.”

He means it. He doesn’t say anything he doesn’t mean.
