We dust ourselves off and he puts his skull charm back on.

“Okay,” I say. “Is everyone ready to meet my parents?”

“Completely,” Carter says. “What? Parents love me.”

“Lunch first, right?” Adrian asks.

“Definitely.”

Chapter Eighty-Seven

Rachel

Thecaféisjustlike I remembered. It’s the first time I’m walking in through the doors without Cheryl and that feels kind of weird, but good. I want my guys to know this place. I spent a lot of late afternoons here in high school. I made a lot of good memories here.

“It’s quaint,” Adrian says. “I feel like that’s the only appropriate word.”

“Yeah, it’s kind of old-fashioned but cute,” I agree. “The burgers are decent, but it’s the milkshakes that are awesome.”

“Are you gonna order vanilla?” Silas teases, reminding me of our first and subsequent dates to the only restaurant in Wolf Creek that we actually like.

“Hmm. They have four flavors, so what do you think?”

“I think we’re ordering one of each,” Silas says. “So, you can taste them all and decide if vanilla really is the best.”

“Ooh,” Carter says. “Taste test. I like it.”

“I think I’ll sit that one out,” Adrian says. “I’ll take a vanilla and you guys can fight over the other flavors while I have the best all to myself.”

“So, where’s this super secret hidden booth?” Silas asks.

Carter gasps. “I see it!”

He rushes over to the corner of the room, only to come back with a pout.

“Someone’s already in it,” he moans.

“Well, it is pretty popular with high school kids. Sorry.”

I’m about to tell him we can come back some other time, but I doubt we’ll have much reason to be back here. Coming all this way for milkshakes seems insane.

“That booth looks good to me,” Adrian points out.

We head over and I sink in the same side as Carter, winding up with Silas and Adrian across from us like it always is at home.Huh. I don’t know if that was some weird subconscious thing, or a complete fluke.

Lunch comes within twenty minutes, and I only start to regret the excessive consumption of a milkshake and a half when I remember we’re headed to my parent’s house next.

My stomach gurgles a little bit. Nerves. They came back. I knew they would.

“Dessert?” Adrian jokes.

Carter groans. “No!” He sips more milkshake. “Wait. Is it cake?”

“Are you still drinking that?” I ask him, not believing it.

He nods. “Silas is a lightweight. That makes this my win.”

“I drank way too much,” I admit. “It was too good, and it was a mistake.”
