“Yes, yes, and yes,” Carter agrees, while he continues with the remains of Silas’ chocolate shake.

I could barely eat half my burger. Carter cleaned his plate. He must be feeling way worse than I am.

“So?” Carter asks when he’s finished the milkshake.

“So?” Adrian asks.

“Is it cake?” he asks.

“No dessert for you,” he says. “I’m not carrying a cake box to Rachel’s parent’s house unless it’s a gift for them.”

“That’s a good idea, actually,” I tell them. “My mom would never admit she eats cake, but when she does it’s from this restaurant, and Dad definitely loves cake.”

We sit for a little longer until we stop feeling like we might burst, and then I order a cake to go in a box, and two large bottles of their finest fancy soda pop, because what the hell, I might as well bring gifts to the live-givers who are about to disown me.

“You okay?” Adrian asks as we head out.

“I am.”

Chapter Eighty-Eight

Rachel

Carterisimpressedbymy parent’s house, and my dad’s car and the fancy fountain water feature in the big, round driveway. He Oohs and Aahs a bit at everything, and I admit it’s cute to watch, but he settles down once he realizes I’m getting a little anxious.

“We don’t have to be here,” Adrian reminds me. “This is totally up to you.”

“We can go home right now,” Silas adds. “Or we can hold your hands and get you through this, if it’s really what you want. All you need to do is tell us.”

I press my lips together as I look up at the house.

It’s not a special place to place to me, and it never really was. I spent as much time as possible outside of this house because it was just where I stored my stuff and laid my head down at night.

It was never a home. I never felt warm and safe inside.

“I need to do this. I know I’ll regret it if I don’t.”

They take my hands as we approach the front door.

I wonder which detail my mother will frown over first as Carter rings the bell.

The fact that two boys are holding my hands, or the fact that I’m wearing a bright green T-shirt with a bright blue skirt and sneakers? My hair is back to blonde with blue streaks because we all needed to shift and take a run around in our wolf forms for a while last night, and then I asked Carter to do my usual streaks when he did his hair.

Oh, and there’s the major detail that I’m now a hybrid shifter.

What do I think I’m doing here? Am I about to give my parents heart attacks?

The door opens, and a woman in an apron looks out at us. “May I help you?”

“Yes, we’re here to see my parents. I’m Rachel, you must be new.”

“Rachel … Ah, yes. Please, come in.”

Nice. I’m being invited in, like a vampire.

Carter snorts and then bares his fangs at me theatrically.

What a goofball.Never change, Carter.
