“I like the sound of this already.”

“I bought new copies, so don’t worry, I didn’t do anything scandalous to your books. I highlighted the passages I liked in these ones. The extra special sexy moments that got me off.”

Oh my God. This woman is too perfect to be real.

“I fucking love it,” I tell her. “I can’t wait to re-read and listen.”

And get myself off to the parts that she’s highlighted, of course. I hope to hell she’s marked up half the damn passages in every book.

I put it on the bed and kiss her. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” she tells me.

“Are you ready for your present?” I ask.

She nods, taking my hand and letting me lead her to my desk where the wig is displayed alongside fresh new makeup supplies and hair dye.

“Um, did you get me a wig?” she jokes.

“I got you a mermaid make-over,” I admit.

She gasps as she sits down, and I turn the wig to let her see the colors.

“Oh, wow. Those are gorgeous.”

“I can do one of them, or all of them. You can try one at a time, or whatever you want.”

“All over color?” she asks, sounding a little excited.

I nod. “We can do streaks if you want, but I pictured something a little more dramatic.”

“I can’t believe I’m doing this,” she says as she looks at the colors and nods. “Can we do that one?”

It’s a soft blue shade that’ll look gorgeous against her sun-kissed skin.

“I can use a couple darker shades to add some dimension, too,” I tell her.

“That sounds great,” she tells me.

I get towels out and cover her shoulder and lap. Then, I pick up my brush and make sure her hair has no tangles before I get started sectioning and applying the dye. She relaxes quickly, like she always does when I’m working on her hair. Sometimes, we chat all the way through, and other times like today, there’s a comfortable silence, uninterrupted by stray thoughts or chatter.

I love the present she got me, but it doesn’t beat this one. Knowing she’s completely at ease with me, that all she’s feeling is contentment. That’s the best present, and it’s one I already had.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Silas

WakingupalonewhenI’ve gone to sleep beside Rachel brings back bad memories. The swell of panic that rises is an unstoppable force that makes me jump to my feet before I remind myself to follow her scent trail because the chances are she’s in the house and she’s perfectly fine.

Being kidnapped twice surely must be the limit for one lifetime. I seriously doubt it’s likely to happen again, but I don’t think I could ever forgive myself if it happened again the same way.

I step out into the hall, where I can hear the sound of my mate’s voice coming from Carter’s room.

The relief that washes over me takes my worries away.

My heart is racing, and it was for nothing.

She’s safe. She’s with Carter.
