Page 68 of Shifting Spirits

I use the bathroom while I wait for my body to catch up to what my head knows. I take my time brushing my teeth, and I hit the shower when I realize the heat will help relax me.

When I exit the bathroom, I feel normal again.

I throw on clothes that make me feel boring. A dark gray T-shirt and black jeans. I’d change but my closet is full of similar items. I don’t own anything that might be considered ‘nice’.

Rachel pulled out all the stops last night. She looked like a rockstar.

I’m not sure what I look like. Trouble, if you ask my neighbors.

Pretty sure that’s at least partly because of the tattoos. The humans in Wolf Creek lead sheltered lives, protected in secret by their shifter neighbors in a small town where not much happens, at least as far as they know.

I stand out here. Always have.

I run a hand through my dark hair. It’s still damp, but it’ll dry pretty quickly.

The charm Rachel gave me glints in the mirror, catching my eye.

I smile at it as I bring my hand down.

The perfect present.

I’m never going to want to take it off.

Stepping out of my room for the second time, I head over to Carter’s. The door isn’t closed, but I can’t see anyone on the bed, despite hearing them discussing glitter.

“Hey,” I call out as I step into the room, finding them at Carter’s desk which is hidden behind the door.

Rachel gives me a smile. “What do you think of my new look?”

I blink at her. Carter’s dyed her hair a blue-gray color all over, and she’s wearing shimmery silver eyeshadow with that little black eyeliner flick thing that some girls seem to go nuts for. Her skin is also shiny in a weird kind of way. I think she has silvery stuff on her cheeks. The look is so striking it takes me a second to look away from her face and realize she’s wearing a skimpy, sparkly green dress that shows way too much leg to be safe to wear in public.

“Holy hell,” I murmur, struggling to put what I’m feeling into words.

“Presenting Mermaid Rachel, Queen of the Sea,” Carter declares, as Rachel stands up.

“I think you’ve found your calling, Carter,” she tells him.

“You did this?” I ask, not sure why I’m surprised.

He gives me a smug smile. “Of course.”

“I mean, there’s no way I could do this makeup. And the hair …” Rachel shakes her head. “Carter made it look natural, somehow. It would have come off looking like blue candyfloss if I’d tried to do this.”

Last night she looked like a rockstar, and today she looks like a nymph, or something. Definitely some kind of fey creature with that silver sparkle on her cheeks and eyes.

“Tinkerbell,” I blurt out, making her laugh.

“It’s the dress, right?” she asks, putting a hand on her hip.

Carter crosses his arms. “I put a lot of thought into this look and it’s definitely not Tinkerbell.”

“The hair and makeup might not be, but the dress is a hundred percent adult Tinkerbell, so short you’ll see absolutely everything if she bends over,” I argue.

“Hah, that’s where you’re wrong because it came with matching panties.”

Rachel spins around and bends to show the panties. Oh, she definitely looks like a foxy Tinkerbell.

“I like it,” I tell them.
