“That’s the one,” I confirm.

“Shit,” Carter says, pushing his hair back out his eyes. “I think I might need to eat after all. I don’t want to go to jail on an empty stomach.”

“Nobody’s going to jail,” Adrian says. “Don’t be so dramatic.”

“I demand a whole ginger cake for my last supper,” he goes on, pretending he hasn’t heard our Alpha.

“We’re kind of burning daylight here,” I tell them.

Adrian looks at Silas. “Do you have supplies left for another cake?”

Silas frowns. “If I make one half the size, then yes.”

“Yes!” Carter says, thrusting an arm into the air in victory.

“We’ll head out to Midnight Valley in the morning. It’s a long drive there and back, so we’re not going there tonight. After you two have had a few decent meals and one good night of rest without wiping each other out. Silas, if there’s anything else you want to make sure we check, or do, you can figure that out tonight.”

Silas shakes his head. “I mean, I should go around to his place in the morning and make sure he’s still not home in case he’s back by then, but I don’t think there’s anything else.”

“Okay, that’s the plan,” Adrian says. “Who wants what for breakfast?”

“Just cereal for me,” I tell him, shrugging when he gives me a ‘be serious’ look. “I want to start slow.”

“Then, I’ll make you oatmeal with banana slices,” he says, naming one of my usual breakfasts.

“Don’t forget the honey,” I remind him.

“I’ll wait for my cake,” Carter says.

Adrian shakes his head. “You need to eat something else first.”

“Fine. Throw me a banana.”

He stands up to catch it and grumbles out the bruises he just caused with his fingers.

“Eat it,” Adrian warns him. “I’m not giving you anything else.”

“Fine,” he mutters. “I’ll close my eyes.”

He eats the banana in three massive bites, opening his eyes when it’s over.

“Now, I’m waiting for cake.”

“You’d better enjoy this,” Silas mutters as he mixes ingredients.

“You know he will,” I tell him.

We all do.

Chapter Forty-Eight

Silas

Afterafewhoursspent running around in our shifted forms as a pack, we head home to get the good night’s sleep that Adrian decided we need before we can be ready for whatever tomorrow brings. Adrian decides it’s best if Carter and Rachel sleep apart to make sure they both actually sleep.

I try not to smirk at the look on Carter’s face when he’s told he can’t snuggle up to our mate tonight. He’s been gloating about getting to spend so much time with her alone, so it’s kind of funny that he’s being told it’s not happening again tonight.

“Rachel needs me,” he complains. “I’m the only one who snuggles with her.”
