She really is drained. I know this will make her feel better.

It won’t replenish her magic. She’ll have to connect with nature for that.

But this will restore her faster, make her feel less exhausted.

It feels good to use my touch to help her.

When the energy starts to fade, I snuggle in a little closer.

It doesn’t usually make me sleepy, but it’s never been that intense before, either.

If Adrian knew I was done, he’d probably kick me out.

I should probably try to fall asleep before he realizes.

Chapter Five

Adrian

I’llneverforgetthelook of terror on Rachel’s face as she ran for her life through the woods. The first time I saw it was in one of my dreaded prophetic nightmares. I knew I was watching something that was beyond a doubt going to happen, and it did.

The psychotic warlock who’d bound Rachel’s magic chased her when she ran from him. He caught her and stabbed her before I could get there. We knew what was going to happen and we got there too late to save her from the full weight of his fury.

She was going to die. I couldn’t let that happen.

That’s why I bit her, turning her into a witch-wolf hybrid. Her new shifter side allowed a wound that would have been fatal to heal, and my wolf claimed her as his mate with that bite, marking her without her explicit consent.

I relive every moment of that fateful night, right down to the gut-wrenching hesitation I felt before I made the decision to save and claim this stranger as mine.

I taste her blood in my mouth and I see her clutching Carter’s hand.

Dread fills me as I look down at the mark I made.

She gasps and lets go of Carter to inspect the wound.

When she looks up at me, her eyes are filled with disgust.

“What did you do?” Her voice is filled with venom.

She gets to her feet and stares down at me, her body tense with rage.

Guilt floods through me as I shift back to my human form. “I’m sorry. I didn’t …”

“You should have let me die,” she snaps, stalking away from us.

I lose my breath watching her go.This isn’t how it happened.

I wake up with a sharp inhale, finding myself in bed next to my sleeping mate. Apparently, I dozed off watching over her.

I wait to feel relieved that the dream was just a dream.

My stomach feels heavy with dread. That feeling doesn’t go away.

The dream wasn’t just a dream.

I don’t have normal dreams.

I have nightmares that come true.
