Milos isn’t embarrassed in the slightest, he waves the woman out of the room then leans forward, intent. “Why did you think I would be?”

I shake my head. “I’m trying to give you my limits. With the spanking thing and you calling me a brat. Are you into dominant and submissive—”

A hand goes up, slicing the air in front of him. “No.” Then he seems to consider the question. “Not in the conventional sense, as if any of it is conventional. It is more of a control issue than being dominant; however, I guess it is one in the same. I’ve told you both times I did it I did not want to spank you. Spanking a woman’s ass adds a heightened layer to pleasure as pain is the same thing to the brain as pleasure. Punishment is nothing I have done in the past because I was not with a woman long enough for me to give a shit enough to correct her behavior if she did something I didn’t like. I simply never saw her again.”

He frowns. “This marriage isit.Forever. You belong to me. Only death will free you from me, and if you go before me I’ll follow you into heaven or hell.”

The words are a promise that causes a crazy twisting in my chest.

“You, my sweetkotyonok, do not learn by me telling you a fucking thing. The only thing you truly pay attention to is action. Me taking things from you like your car or access to your sister is not something I want to do to you. You need your sister. A spanking is quick and efficient, and to my great surprise something you enjoy. Although the humiliation you feel at this time is enough of a punishment for you to correct your behavior.”

“You don’t tell me anything. You order me around and take me for granted. Because you’re so beautiful I’m going to roll onto my back and accept whatever you choose to dole out to me. That isn’t a marriage, a partnership. There are two people in this marriage. Why don’t I get a say in it?” I try to make him understand.

His phone rings. Shaking his head, he answers it. “What, Nikita? I’m trying to have dinner with my wife. What the fuck do you mean he shot at you? Fucking hell. Hold on.”

Even though I’m angry at him, I hate he’s leaving. “Stay, eat. Peter will see you home. This is going to take some time.”

Watching him walk away, I want to scream in frustration.

Chapter20

Celia

The dressmaker hasfour samples for me to try on. I’m stunned by one of the dresses. It reminds me of the white nightgown I wore years ago. The one I wear often when I need to feel closer to Milos. While the dressmaker doesn’t say it, I have no doubt this is Milos’s doing. They are eerily similar. It’s the one I pick because I want to make him happy.

Carina surprises me by being excited to pick out her own dress. She looks so pretty in a pink lace dress, I’m stunned. Carina doesn’t usually do dresses.

“Don’t look at me like that. It’s pretty and it’s your wedding day. I’m going to give it a try.” She laughs.

“You’re beautiful.” I blink fast. “So grown up and I…when did that happen, us growing up?”

“Hell if I know. It doesn’t feel like it most days, does it?”

“No, less than a week after graduation it’s marriage and kids.” I sigh.

She shakes her head. “At least it’s college graduation and not high school the way most of the mafia girls go through. I couldn’t imagine you dealing with Milos at nineteen.”

I shudder. “He would have preferred it. I would have been terrified and done exactly what he wanted on everything. Now I’m daring to talk back to him. You’d think something was wrong with me, not oh, I don’t know, maybe him listening and talking to me.”

“Fuck. I have a client meeting for a chick trying to do her own manga. It will literally take forever. Help me get out of this dress.” She turns for me to unzip her.

Too soon I’m hugging her goodbye. Outside of the dressmakers I’m at a loss of what to do with myself. I don’t want to go home to an empty house. Milos’s house is where I want to go, but I feel weird asking.

“It is time. The realtor is waiting.” Peter is in front of me.

“Realtor?” I’m confused.

“For the cat sanctuary. She is going to show you properties Milos has approved.”

“Rescue,” I mutter as I get into the car. I had completely forgotten about it.

For the next three hours I’m shown around the city and finally pick a building in Uptown I think is best for the space and how close it is to what will be my new home north of the city. The woman tells me she’ll get the paperwork to Milos, and because it’s vacant, as soon as he signs it’s mine.

When I get into the SUV I’m not surprised when it travels to Milos’s home, only I’m crushed to find he isn’t there. He was on his way but something has come up. I’m to have dinner then I’ll be taken home.

I barely manage to eat half before I tell Peter I want to go home.
