“Only about a year. I shared a place with a friend before that.”

“Must be nice,” Sam smiles, “to have a place of your own.”

“It is,” I respond with a smile back. “Can’t be easy to still be living with your parents, though. You can’t exactly bring home any girls.”

His eyes widen slightly. “No, I can’t.”

I lean over the table even more. His eyes are bulging. It’s like he’s never seen a pair of breasts before. “Must be frustrating. I would go crazy.”

“Yeah, it’s…” He swallows hard. “It can be sometimes.”

I tilt my head, feeling bold under his gaze. I don’t know what it is, but Sam’s obvious appreciation for me is intoxicating. I still can’t believe he recognized me from my profile! With all the bots, it’s sometimes hard to remember that there are actualpeople among my followers, too. “What is it you like about my pictures, Sam?”

He’s squirming in his seat. “I just think they’re… nice.”

“In what way?”

“The way you look in them,” he says, the words barely more than a whisper.

I glance down at my dress. “Do you like my clothes?”

“Yeah.”

“I have a bunch more back home,” I whisper to him, smiling at the way his entire body tenses. “You want to help me pick out what to wear in my next picture? We could take some pictures together, too. I’m sure I can bring some people over to your profile.”

“Really?” he asks, stunned. “You’d do that?”

And maybe you can bring over some people to mine, I think, but I keep my mouth shut. One step at a time. I nod. “Sure. What do you say?”

I love the eagerness in his eyes as he nods. Sam’s so different from Donnie’s cocky way of being around me. I think I like this better. I eat up the way he’s admiring me when I stand up.

“Let’s go.”

CHAPTER 11

Sam is quiet when I let us into my apartment. He looks a bit unsure of what to do, just standing there in the hallway in his coat and boots. I shrug out of my jacket and smile at him.

“Make yourself at home.”

“Okay.” He takes off his coat and hangs it next to mine. Damn, he reallyistall.

“Do you want something to drink?” I ask and make my way into the kitchen.

“Maybe some water,” Sam says and follows me inside. I hand him a glass, and he gulps down the cold water.

“You don’t have to be nervous, Sam,” I tell him. “I’m just a regular person.”

He smiles a bashful smile, then his dark eyes meet mine. “Okay, sorry. It’s just weird seeing you in real life.”

It’s surreal to have someone recognize me like this. To have someone know things about me without having met me before. But at the same time, it’s really cool. If I can get in contact with more people like Sam, then I won’t need to buy any more bots. Hopefully, I can get to the bigger fish eventually, but I’ll take what I can get. Sam’s small following is nothing to sneeze at, either.

“So,” I begin, “I need an outfit for my next picture. Let’s go pick it out.”

Sam is right on my heel as I make my way to my closet. He’s standing so close that our arms are brushing against each other. “You have a lot of clothes,” he comments, carefully touching one of my dresses. “Hey, I recognize this one!” he exclaims and pulls out the red dress I wore a while back.

“Yeah? You like that one?”

He nods. “It looked nice on you.”
