“I do, actually,” I admit. “It’s a lot more fun than I thought it would be.”

Tanner rubs my cold hands some more. He doesn’t look as angry now. I guess he’s calmed down out here in the cold. “I’m glad. So, you’re down with the oldies now, huh?”

I burst out laughing. “Down with the oldies?”

He grins. “Yes. Do you like them?”

“They’re great,” I tell him. “We’re totally down. Dawg!”

“Has any of the men proposed to you yet?” he asks, an amused twinkle in his eyes.

“No, I’m not their type. They’re all lusting after Mrs. Johnson.”

“Is she pretty?”

“So pretty. Looks like a silent film actress.”

“Maybe I’ll have to come with you to work one day,” he says. “I want to meet this woman.”

I scoff. “I don’t think so. She already gets enough male attention. I bet she wouldn’t mind meetingyou, though.”

Tanner raises an eyebrow. “Yeah? Why is that? Have you told her about me?”

I feel myself blush. “Maybe.”

“Good things, I hope.”

I look up at him, my smile falling slightly. “Why are you being all… I don’t know. Charming.”

“You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

I pull my hands away. “It’s confusing.”

His expression turns serious. “Sorry. It’s just so nice to see you again.”

“What do you want me to say to that?” I ask him. Tanner bites his lip, regarding me.

“You don’t need to say anything if you don’t want to. That’s not why I said it.” He’s quiet for a moment. “Are you still mad at me?”

I sigh. “I was never mad at you, Tanner. Not really. I just… you kind of made me feel like crap.”

“I know. I do feel bad about that.” Tanner steps closer and tucks a strand of hair behind my ear. “You know, I’ve been thinking. Maybe I was…”

“Sophie!”

Lacey from the grocery store is waving at me, obviously drunk. She’s holding onto a guy whom I recognize as her husband, and he looks equally out of it. I force a smile as she comes over to me, engulfing me in a tight hug.

“It’s so good to see you!” she practically screams, slurring her words a bit. “It’s been so boring at work without you.”

“It’s good to see you, Lacey,” I say back, willing her to go away. Her timing couldn’t have been worse; I want to know what Tanner was about to say.

“You know, the girl who replaced you is such a little know-it-all. She thinks she’s better than everyone. I swear, one day, I’ll…”

I let her go on her little spiel. Tanner is watching me, and I can’t help but watch him back. What was he about to say? I search his face, but he’s impossible to read.

“So, how’s the new job?” Lacey asks. “I could never do that, wiping old peoples’ butts.”

I don’t have the energy to tell her that I don’t actually do that, so I just smile and tell her that it’s great. Lacey goes on another spiel, and I look over at Tanner again. He mouths something to me as Lacey’s voice keeps going and going.
