How the hell did I end up hundreds—maybe thousands—of miles away from Osprey Falls?

A frantic tapping at my temple draws my attention and I activate my communication charm with my guys. Their voices flood my head all at once, making me wince as the pain increases.

Sweeney, baby, are you okay?

Where the hell are you, sweetheart?

You better fucking answer, love.

Please, Ro, let us know you’re okay.

I swallow at the panic in their voices, the fear that something might have happened to me. And I should probably hurry to reassure them I’m alright, but instead what I say is,can you guys quiet down, please? My head is killing me. One at a time.

Are you okay?Fielder asks.

I think so? I don’t have any visible injuries, but I’m all achy.

Where are you?Gideon demands.

I focus on sending them an image of the area around us, while Kohaku presses into my back. His face nuzzles into my neck.

That doesn’t tell us anything, love.

I know! But it’s as much information as I have at the moment. Do you think I have a built in nav system or something?

You could use your phone, Ro. See if it’ll find your location.Ezra sounds slightly amused.

I smack myself as I facepalm, and then tug my phone from my bag, pulling up the maps app and seeing if it can find where I am. Kohaku watches as I do, his cheek brushing against mine.

A sound of triumph erupts from me when it succeeds. I’m north of Kalaloch in Washington State. What the hell? How did I get so damn far away?

I try to take a screenshot of my location and send it via text to the boys, but my phone’s connectivity doesn’t extend that far apparently, and when I try to call Fielder, it fails to go through. So I turn back to my internal communication spell.

I’m in Washington. No fucking clue how I got here.

We’re coming to get you, Sweeney.

I shake my head, even though he can’t see it.No need. Now that I know where I am, I can make my way back to you. Stick with Cohen and learn everything you can from the Library. I should be back by tomorrow.

Not a fucking chance in Hell, Sweeney. It’s not safe for you to be alone.

Our woman is not alone, Fielder Harris. I am with her.I blink in surprise. How is Kohaku able to communicate with them? He wasn’t part of the casting, but then I guess if he’s bound to me, maybe the spells extend to him automatically. Or maybe it’s just a demon thing. I don’t know enough about what he’s capable of to know if it’s normal or not.

Oh, excellent, the demon can communicate with us.Hardin sounds sarcastic as fuck.I’m sure he’ll take such good care of you, love.

I frown, and start toward the nearest road, which isn’t that far according to the map. Kohaku follows in my footsteps, his tails swishing behind him. You’d rather I was here alone?

That’s not what I meant, Rosalind.

I don’t respond. In fact, I’m quiet for so long, that eventually Fielder just says, call us when you get to a place that has reception. I’m going to send a chopper to pick you up. I’ll give them a meeting place once we confirm where you are.

I roll my eyes.Of course, you are. I’ll see you all soon. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine.

Before any of them can respond, I brush my finger over the communication rune behind my ear and shut it off. I really don’t need them scrabbling around in my head when I’m fighting nausea from my headache and I’m feeling drained from having Kohaku emerge from my skin. It’ll only make it worse.

“Are you alright, little warrior?” Kohaku asks quietly.

I shake my head. “I’m fine. Just that portal or whatever we went through made me really fucking tired. All I really want to do is take a nap, but there is no good place to do that here in the woods.”
