“Good.” He places a soft kiss on my lips and then pulls totally away from me. “Go see your dad. Get the answers you need. I’m going to go rub into those assholes’ faces how very much they fucked up with the most perfect woman in the whole fucking world.”

I open my mouth to tell him not to do that, but he’s already striding away from me. Chuckling to myself, I shake my head and climb into the car.

Once I’ve settled, Kohaku passes over the pink box, shuts the door and rounds the car to get in the driver’s seat.

We drive in silence for a while, but I can feel him glancing at me every so often. Eventually he says, “You should eat something, little warrior. Keep your strength up.”

I robotically open the box and peer inside. Tears immediately spring to my eyes. Donuts. He bought a dozen donuts. He must have remembered me asking Garza yesterday if I could bring them.

“I’m not sure what their significance is, but it seemed important to you yesterday.” I nod wordlessly and eye the array of treats. He must have found a fancy donut shop, because these are definitely more than just supermarket fare.

“Every Sunday, my dad would take Desi and me to a donut shop. He’d try to find a new one each time, so that we could always try something new. It got pretty hard after a while, finding one we hadn’t been to. The farthest we went was two hours.”

Kohaku glances at me, eyebrows raised. “Two hours for a donut?”

I shake my head and pick up a maple glazed donut with bacon bits sprinkled on it. “It wasn’t really about the donuts, so much as it was an adventure. He always made everything so goddamn fun.”

I sink my teeth into the confection and savor the sweet and salty flavor, loving that combination. Kohaku is quiet while I eat, navigating the roads back to the facility without any hesitation at all, as if he memorized the way when I drove here yesterday.

When I’ve finished, I go to lick the maple glaze from my fingers, but the kitsune grabs my hand before I can and sucks my digits into his mouth, one at a time, all while not taking his eyes off the road.

He lets out a rumble of pleasure and then glances at me. “I think we should get a vat of that and dip your whole body in it. Then I can spend hours licking it off you.”

My face flushes as I imagine it. I’ve never really been into food play during sex. It seems too messy. The last thing I want is to get a UTI from having champagne poured over my pussy, but the idea of Kohaku licking maple flavored glaze off me doesn’t sound half bad.

I blink against the swell of arousal and scowl at him. “Don’t say shit like that to me when I’m minutes away from seeing my dad for the first time in nine years.”

The sly smirk fades from his mouth as he glances at me again. “I apologize, little warrior. I should have thought of that.” Flabbergasted, I blink at him.

He glances at me again. “What?”

My head slowly moves back and forth. “I’m just shocked at how easily you did that.”

He arches a dark red brow in question. “What’s that?”

“Apologize. You just did it right away without making a big deal about it or trying to justify your actions.” I shake my head slowly, shifting against my seat. “Fuck, that’s hot.”

He chuckles. “I’ll keep that in mind for the future.”

He pulls into the parking lot of the facility, and parks near the visitors’ entrance. After he turns the engine off, he looks at me. “Do you want me to go with you?” I know he doesn’t mean physically, but in his shadow form, tucked up against my ribs like he prefers to be.

Yesterday I’d felt sure I wanted him with me, but now I’m not sure. Would it be better to have someone with me, even if they can’t say anything? Or would it be better if I go in alone? I have no idea what he’s going to say to me, no idea what he might reveal. Do I want someone else overhearing that?

Probably not.

I shake my head. “I think I’ll be okay. And I can call you if I need you, right?”

He reaches over and gives my hand a gentle squeeze. “Always, little warrior.”

A car pulls up next to us, and I scowl when I see Fielder behind the wheel, Gideon in the seat next to him. Seeing them shocks me into action and I throw open my door, still clutching the box of donuts to my chest, and stride toward the visitors’ entrance without looking back.

Garza is behind the plexiglass when I enter and as soon as he sees me, he scrambles up and around the counter out the locked door. “You came back!”

My brows lower. “Of course, I did.”

He laughs like I said a joke and then motions at the box in my hand. “For your father?’

I nod, and he takes the donuts from me, ushering me over to a security desk. “Give them your purse too, and they can make sure there aren’t any prohibited items or materials while I get you checked in.”
