The soldiers were in place, but I knew it was only a matter of time before there would be an attempt to invade the tight security.

The dogs barked for a full minute until Dillon calmed them, issuing soft words that I couldn’t understand.

I slammed my fists against the desk’s surface, trying to control my breathing.

“She’s in good hands, boss. I made certain of that.”

Exhaling, I glared at Dillon. He wasn’t to blame for Sarah getting out from under my protection. She’d been told she couldn’t go. She’d been given the rules. She’d ignored them.

And she could have lost her life.

That wasn’t acceptable.

That wasn’t going to happen again.

“She damn well better be,” I retorted. I’d never been this tense or this angry.

He nodded, knowing that I was almost over the edge. “The nurse is out of town.”

“What does that mean?”

“She left for a short vacation, so we don’t need to worry about her.”

I almost laughed. At least something had gone right in the last few days.

A full two minutes passed and the tension continued to mount. My phone rang and I knew exactly who to expect.

“What the fuck did you do, ordering goddamn soldiers to surround my house? My men do a fine job.”

“Yeah? Well, things are about to get dicey, Pops. You’ll be thanking me later.”

“What the hell is going on?”

After explaining the situation, I noticed Dillon was even more furious. He moved twice to the window, peering out to ensure men were guarding the back. “I want a goddamn meeting with Joseph Moretti tomorrow.”

“After what you did, you’ll be lucky if he doesn’t try and put a bullet in your brain.”

“Then we’ll know he’s the one determined to bring us down.” I sucked in my breath before I said anything else. “Which I don’t buy.”

Pops was thrown by my words. “What are you thinking, son?”

“Just set up the meeting, Pops.”

He grunted. “I’ll see what I can do. You better be right about this.”

Yeah, I better be.

“Fucking bastard,” Dillon said under his breath.

“Yeah. There are a lot to go around. You could place me in that category.”

Smirking, he shook his head. “Not if I want to live for much longer.”

I lifted my eyebrows and grinned. He was a good man to have on my side.

Woof!

Happy noises grabbed my attention.
