I nodded, knowing she was right. I fucking hated Damien and what he made his own son do. Jace was a sweetheart. He’d never, ever, force himself on a woman like that. He loved those girls, all of them. They were like family to him. All he ever wanted was to protect them.
“I’ll tell him. As soon as I get there Friday, I’ll talk to him. I promise. Just take care of him until I get there, okay? Promise me.”
“I promise, Samara. You have my word.”
Three hard knocks to the door had me jumping out my skin. As I wiped my tears away, I told Ginger to hold on for a minute.
“Who is it?” I rasped out.
“It-It’s Rhett.”
Rhett? I scoffed to myself. Great. What the fuck didhewant?
“Hang on a minute.”
I crept down the hall to my bedroom. “Hey, Gin. I got to go. Rhett’s at my door.”
“Shit,” she hissed. “Okay. Hopefully I’ll see you again soon. And hey…”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t worry about the shit going on with your roommate.Youknow the truth, Samara, and you didn’t do anything wrong. Sky will come around and she’ll see how big of a fucking idiot she is for not believing you.”
“Thanks Ginger. You’re an amazing friend. I love you, and I’m sorry.”
“I love you too, kid. Be safe and be smart. And don’t forget I’m here for you anytime you need me.”
I hung up the phone then and got myself together, wiping my face again. After heaving in a deep breath, I walked down the hall and approached the door, opening it.
And there he was, holding a large bouquet of flowers tightly in his hands, a nervous smile on his face.
“Hey,” he muttered, swallowing hard. “Can we talk?”
“Yeah.” I opened the door and let him in. “Let’s talk.”
Chapter 47
Samara
Thedayspassedbyin a blur and before I knew it, Friday was here. Sky never came back to the dorm. Well, she did, but it was only long enough to pack up a few bags and then she left again. She didn’t look at me, much less speak to me except to inform me that she’d be sleeping at Brian’s from now on. The stunt that fucker pulled caused me to lose one of my best friends, and I had no idea if I’d ever get her back.
I was losing everyone I loved and cared about, it seemed. It was the story of my fucking life.
I packed two overnight bags just in case I’d need them and walked inside the living room, frowning at the flowers which were now half-dead on the kitchen counter.
Sky was right—Rhett really is an honest sweetheart. When he stopped by the other day, we sat down and had a long talk about everything.
He apologized for recruiting me. He admitted that it was his idea and that Isaac backed him despite Phantom’s protest. As we discussed it further, I’d learned that me and the rest of the recruits were due to start the trials in a few weeks. I wasn’t surprised. I knew how the whole recruitment thing worked. It was the same with the Outlaws and all the other crews spread within the Valley.
I hadn’t seen much of Rhett since then, or any of the Ravagers. Hell, I hadn’t seen Isaac or Phantom at all since that night Isaac showed up here at my dorm. Sleeping with him was foolish, and I hadn’t talked about it because there was nothing to tell. It was just sex. Strictly business and nothing further.
Rhett did tell me that he and the others had some business to attend to with their father, so I could only assume that was why they hadn’t been around. I tried to push and get whatever info I could out of him, but just like with the Outlaws, Rhett wouldn’t tell me shit unless I was an official Ravager. It was aneed-to-know basis thing,as Rhett had put it.
Which was fine, for them.
As for me, it put me in a deep hole I hadn’t a clue if I could get myself out of. My intel for Damien was slim. Hopefully what I did know would be enough for him not to harm me or treat me any worse than he treated the other girls at the club.
I glanced down at my phone to see it was 3:45PM. Damien wanted me to be there at 4, but it was impossible. I’d be late. Classes didn’t end until 3:30 and it’d take at least an hour for me to get there. Just to possibly save myself from being punished, I called him to give him the news.
