“Tell her the fucking truth, Brian.” My chest heaved as I glared him down over Sky’s shoulder. “YouknowI didn’t touch you. And the only way you would’ve known that I fucked Isaac is if you were listening outside of the door after he made you leave.”

Brian’s face fell for a moment, quickly correcting it just as Sky whipped around to study his expression.

“You know what,” I scoffed. “I can prove it. Why don’t I go get—”

“No,” Sky protested as she marched over to the couch and snatched up her backpack, with Brian grinning ear to ear behind her. “I thought I could trust you, but obviously I was wrong. Fuck you, Samara. Go to Hell.”

“But Sky, I swear I didn’t—”

My words didn’t matter. Nothing I had to say mattered. Just like that, they were gone without Sky so much as sparing me a second glance.

“They recruited you!?” Ginger shrieked over the phone, her voice a petrified rattle.

I tried to keep it together and pretend everything was fine. That I was fine. But the more I saw Brian and Sky together throughout the day, kissing and fondling all over each other, the more it infuriated me and made me want to puke.

That heartless bastard.I couldn’t believe he had the goddamn audacity to lie on me and turn my best friend against me over the shithedid. So, when my lunch period rolled around, I ditched and ran back to my dorm. Ginger called me right when I got here. I wasted no time pouring my heart out to her over everything that’d happened to me this past week.

Well, everything except for the thing between me and Isaac. I didn’t need her going back and telling…

Fuck…I couldn’t even say his name.

“Yes,” I sighed, knuckling my tears away.

Why wouldn’t Sky believe me? Why wouldn’t she let me explain, prove to her that I didn’t do this?

“They recruited me.”

“You can’t do this, Samara. They’ll kill you if they find out—”

“You think I don’t know that?” I lashed back at her, wincing at the fire in my tone. I blew out a hard sigh and sank down on the couch, rubbing away the moisture glued to my face. “I’m sorry. I’m not trying to take my anger out on you. I’m just…”

“You’re upset,” Ginger replied in understanding, “and you have every right to be.”

“There’s no getting out of this, Gin. Damien’s orders were clear. I have to be a spy and report any and all info I discover back to him. He expects an update on Friday. He told me to be at the club at 4.”

“Fuck,” she breathed out, her voice shaky. “That means you won’t be able to help Jace stop the Harvest.”

Hearing his name beckoned more tears to my eyes. “How is he doing? I-I haven’t talked to him since—”

“—since you broke his nose?”

“Yeah.”

Ginger sucked in a hard breath, releasing it. “It’s bad, Samara. Really bad. Damien made him do something horrible.”

I sat up straighter in my seat, clearing my throat. “What happened? What did Damien make him do?”

I listened as Ginger explained and as hard as I tried to prevent it, I broke. A gut-clenching cry erupted out of me.

Jace…

Vicki…

How could Damien make him do something like that?

WHY?!

“He didn’t want to do it,” Ginger’s broken voice spoke again after a long pause. “But it was the only way for Damien to trust him. He-He’s scared you’re gonna hate him. He loves you, Samara, and he needs you. You have to tell him how you feel and that everything will be okay. He’s gonna drink himself to death if you don’t.”
