“I love you.”

My eyes shot open and quickly I sat up, shaking my head. My throat bobbed as I pulled the phone away from my ear and glanced at the display.

It was Samara…

“Kitten?”

“I love you, Jace,” she said again, making my heart swell big and my eyes fill with tears all over again.

“Is it really you?” I whispered.

“Yes, Jace, it’s me. I’m at the club getting ready to go on stage. Come home, Jace. Please. I know what happened with Vicki, and I forgive you. Just please, babe, come home. You have to save Ginger. We’re depending on you.”

“I love you too, Kitten, so fucking much.”

“Then come home, baby. Come home. Save our friend and then we can figure out the rest together.”

She hung up. I looked down at my mother’s grave then held her cross tight, crying out with great respite. “Thank you, Mom. Thank you.”

I kissed the ground then rose to my feet, my chest heaving.

“I’ll save her, Mom. I’ll save them all if it’s the last thing I do.”

“Son, how nice of you to join us. Are you ready for tonight’s festivities?”

My jaw ticked as he turned away from me in the doorway to head to the bar in his office. He grabbed us both a glass then proceeded to pour us drinks.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I replied in a calm, cool tone.

“That’s what I like to hear. Come now, my boy, I have something important I need to discuss with you.”

I stepped deeper into the room and paused at his side. As Father handed over my drink, I downed it quickly then dropped it down on the bar top.

“Everything alright, Son?”

“Peachy,” I answered, the leftover burn in my throat making me cough a little. “Great, actually.”

“Excellent.” Father nodded favorably as he sipped his drink. “It’s best not to waste time so I’ll just get on with it. You and Finn are in charge of tonight’s Harvest. I’ll be staying here to help keep an eye on the club. Finn is already out back helping one of our bouncers load the girls into the truck. You two are to follow behind and help guard our merchandise.”

I nodded as he spoke, fighting back the smile twitching at my lips. “Anything else?”

“You’re still new at this, so I’d like for you to simply observe and let Finn handle the biddings. Once the Harvest is complete, call me. Starting tonight, we’ll be doing things a bit differently. I have specific instructions on where I’d like the new girls to be delivered. I’ll send you the location then. I’ll catch you up on the new changes when you get back. Understood?”

“Yes, Father. Understood.”

He flicked a hand to dismiss me, and I was off, whipping out my phone no sooner than I was out the door.

To be safe, I made a quick detour to the bathroom, checking all the stalls to ensure I was alone. Taking in a deep, nervous breath, I dialed Phantom.

“Are you here?” I asked as soon as he picked up.

“Yes, we’re here. We’re in line waiting to get into the club now.”

“Wait, what? Why are you in line? I thought you were—”

“It’s all part of the plan, Jace. You’ll see. Father didn’t want us directly involved, so Sharkey and Prim are outside in the parking lot, waiting. Let me know when you’re leaving so I can pass the message along.”

“This better work, Phantom.”
