The semi came to a stop ahead of me. I pulled off to the side and slammed the gear in park, jumping out and running fast. I could hear the girls screaming their fucking heads off the faster I approached.

“Goddamnthat was so much fucking fun,” the woman squealed as she jumped out the semi. The other person—a guy—who was driving the other SUV, met her in the middle of the road. He grinned big and wrapped his arms tightly around her before pressing a rough kiss to the top of her head.

“JACE!” Finn rounded the back of the semi and stormed towards me, hugging me tight. “We did it. We fucking did it.”

A set of brakes squealing behind me made me release Finn and whip around fast, my chest heaving hard. It was the other truck. The passenger side door opened and a young woman with black and green hair came running over to us, a bright grin on her face.

“Jace?” she questioned, staring between the four of us.

“Right here,” I said, raising my hand.

“I’m Cindy, a friend of Phantom’s. I’m here to get the girls to safety.”

“Right over here,” Finn called out. He was already at the back of the semi, unlocking the hatch. As he tugged it open, screams filled the air.

“It’s okay,” Finn hollered. “You’re safe now. All of you are safe.”

“We don’t have time to waste,” Cindy said to me as Finn began helping each of the girls out the truck, clasping Ginger tightly in his arms as she wept against his chest.

“Xavier’s orders were clear. Now that we have the girls, we have to go, likenow.”

“Just a minute.”

Finn reached into his back pocket and pulled out a ring box, handing it over to Ginger. “Take it, baby. It’s yours. I wish we had more time, but you have to go now, okay?” He reached up and cradled her face, kissing her deeply. “I love you.”

She nodded then kissed him again. When she turned away from him, she ran fast in my direction, wrapping her arms around me.

“Thank you, Jace. I love you.”

“I love you too, Gin, but Finn’s right, you have to go now. Take care of yourself, okay? We’ll see each other again.”

Tears streamed down her face, but she nodded and followed behind Cindy and the other girls. When they were gone, I sighed hard in relief.

They were safe.

She was safe.

We did it.

Goddamnit we fucking did it.

“Sharkey, Prim, you two good?” Finn asked the others, who were still wearing huge grins, panting hard from what I could only assume to be an adrenaline rush.

“Yeah,” the guy answered.

“Wait.” My brows furrowed as I watched Finn take turns hugging them. “You know them?”

The woman, Prim, bellowed out a deep snicker. “Oh yeah, we knowFinnvery well.”

“It’s a long story,” Finn sighed out as he took in my puzzled glare. “I’ll explain it to you later. First, we have to get our cover stories straight.”

Sharkey pulled out his gun then, cocking it with a wicked grin that made me shiver. “Where do you want it?”

“Woah,” I backed away, my hands raised. “What the fuck are you—”

“We have to make it look like we were ambushed,” said Finn. “And we have to make it believable so that Damien won’t suspect we double crossed him. It’s the only way, Jace.”

“That doesn’t mean you have to fucking shoot me.”
