“That’s not my fucking name you jerk,” I howled as he led me down the hall and to the front door, tugging it open. I fought against him, refusing to budge. Isaac’s grip tightened on my arm and with a heavy shove, I was hurled out of the dorm, unable to get another word out before the door slammed shut.

Phantom was a fucking prick. I couldn’t believe I thought there was any sense of morality tucked away inside that cantankerous son of a bitch. I mean, the asshole wouldn’t even let me finish explaining why I was there. Just as I’d predicted, this whole thing was a complete waste of my time.

I heaved in a deep breath to calm my nerves then released it. This bullshit was stressing me out. I tried, and I failed, but I wasn’t out the game yet. Guess I had no other choice but to walk away and let it go for now and devise a plan B later.

I started my trek back to the girls’ side of campus, pulling out my phone when I was about halfway there. There was a text from Sky.

Sky: Hey, girlie. I’m on the way. We can head back to the dorm together if you’re still out.

My eyes grazed over the message again before darting up to the time. Damnit. It was a quarter past nine. Sky sent me that text ten minutes ago. She left Brian’s about five minutes after I’d made it to the Ravagers’ dorm room.

Tapping the phone symbol, I placed the phone to my ear as I picked up my pace, listening to the line ring. It only rang twice before the call was forwarded to voicemail.

I tried calling her again a second time as I made it closer to the front of the academy, my movement stilling when I heard what sounded like a phone ringing. It was faint, very faint, but the harder I listened, the ringtone vanished at the exact moment the line connected to her voicemail.

“SKY?” I called out, squinting through the darkness while I studied my surroundings. It was quiet, a little too quiet. Then as I thought about it…where are the guards?I hadn’t spotted a single one when I’d left.

“SKY, ARE YOU OUT HERE?”

A sickly feeling bubbled up in my gut as I tried dialing her a third time. The tone was louder now, making me jerk my head hard to the right. It was coming from the woods, near the front gate.

I kept the call connected as I ran fast in that direction, my guts twisting the more Sky’s ringtone blared louder. There was a dim light shining in the grass just outside of the entrance to the woods. My heart stopped dead in my chest at what I saw next.

It was Sky’s phone.

Nausea twisted deep, uneven circles in the pit of my stomach as I kneeled down to retrieve the device. The screen was partially cracked, and if my eyes weren’t deceiving me, there were tiny blood droplets stained on the screen. I began to panic as I sprung to my full height, screaming her name.

Something was wrong. And where the fuck were all the guards?I knew for a fact there was at least two of them guarding the gate every night to ensure none of the students tried any funny business as far as trying to sneak out of the academy past curfew.

I jogged that way with my and Sky’s phone clenched tightly in my hands. The silhouette of two dark figures cleared my sight as I came closer. Their backs were leaning against the gate.

“Hey!” I shouted, stopping an inch away from them. “I need help.”

There was no movement from both their ends. I approached the gate, shoving the phones in my back pocket so I could stick my hand through the openings to reach the guy to my right.

“Hey, did you hear me? I said I need help.” I grabbed ahold of the guard and shook him. A hard gasp expelled from my lungs as the guy toppled headfirst hard onto the gravel. That’s when I saw it. There was a tranquilizer dart sticking straight out from the side of his neck.

Slowly I backed away, my heart pounding, spinning fast on my heels as my name cried out in an echo from somewhere in the woods.

SKY.

I took off in the direction it came from, dodging and weaving through trees and branches.

“SAMARA! HELP! PLEASE, SOMEONE HELP ME!”

“SKY!” I shouted back, panting hard as I sprinted past tree after tree. Her cries grew louder, pumping me full of adrenaline.

“NO! LET ME GO! PLEASE GOD, HELP—”

A loud oomph expelled ahead of me, telling me I was close. I heard coughing, then the sound of more crying.

I’m coming, Sky. I’m coming.

Before I knew it, I’d made it to the same clearing where the party this past weekend was held. It was much brighter here thanks to the moonlight. As I squinted ahead, I saw Sky. She was being dragged by her hair by an unfamiliar figure I couldn’t identify thanks to their back facing me. Her blouse was torn, exposing her bra. Blood was smeared along her chest.

I charged, stopping myself from crying out to her. She saw me coming and as I shook my head, she nodded. Tears rushed down her face as her eyes frantically volleyed between me and the unknown figure.

When the timing was right, I dove, crashing hard into the body of the fucker trying to abduct my friend. We rolled a few times and as their grip on Sky seized, I screamed at her to run.
