“GO, SKY! NOW!”

I stumbled to my feet, grunting as the unknown party member did the same and made to charge at me. I was tackled to the ground, dodging a punch to the face.

“NOW, SKY! FUCKING GO! I GOT THIS!”

She sobbed as she took off running and began screaming her fucking head off. I dodged another blow to my face as I stared up at the culprit. Based solely on their size, it was a guy. He was wearing a mask. Two holes cut out for the eyes and one to the mouth, identical to the same guy who’d murdered my mother and shot me.

Chapter 26

Rhett

“Whatdidshewant?”I asked, after I’d finished getting dressed and entered Phantom’s room, glaring him down. Isaac had just hopped in the shower, so Phantom and I were alone for now.

He kept his back to me and continued typing on his computer. He was in the middle of creating a list of possible candidates for the trials. “She said she needed my help.”

“With what?”

Phantom shrugged. “Don’t know, don’t care.”

“Why do you have to be such an inconsiderate ass? If she came here asking for help, it must’ve been for a good reason.”

“We have more important shit to worry about,” he chided. “If it was reallythatimportant, the bitch would’ve begged. She didn’t, so I had Isaac toss her ass out.”

“You’re unbelievable,” I scoffed. “Did she offer to pay?”

He nodded. “She did.”

“And you still shut her down?”

He spun around and scowled at me. “Yes, I fucking did. She couldn’t afford my prices anyway.”

I’d heard enough. Without breathing another word to him, I trudged out down the hall, ignoring him as he demanded to know where the fuck I was going. It wasn’t rocket science at this point. Something must’ve been wrong. Samara wouldn’t have come to him for help otherwise.

After slipping on my shoes, I was out the door, impatiently cursing as the elevator took its sweet time coming down. When it opened, I entered, running out once the contraption made it to the bottom floor.

The cool air bit at my skin as I ran, making me shiver. I blocked it out and as I made it halfway across campus, toward the front entrance, I heard screaming from afar. My heart pounded as I pushed myself to run faster.

“HELP!”

The voice rang in my ears. I stumbled back a few steps, damn near tittering down hard on my ass as Sky crashed into me, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Rhett,” she sobbed. “Samara needs help.”

I surveyed her condition, my jaw ticking as I took in Sky’s bare chest. Her blouse was torn, and she was covered in blood. A deep gash had been inflicted to the side of her partially covered tit.

“Calm down, Sky,” I said as calmly as I could manage. I reached up and gently grasped her shoulders. “Talk to me. Tell me what happened.”

“I-I was walking back to my dorm. I-I heard footsteps coming from behind me and when I turned, I was hit in the head. Samara saved me, Rhett. She’s in the woods, at the clearing. She told me to run. I-I don’t know if she’s okay. She-She’s fighting the guy…”

“Go,” I demanded, releasing her, my chest tight. “Go get yourself cleaned up. I’ll find Samara.”

She hugged my arm tight, releasing another sob before she released me and ran for her fucking life back inside the academy. Breathing in hard, I made a run for it, protesting to stop until I made it to the clearing.

I slowed my feet, ducking low behind a tree, blinking as I took in two people in the middle of an all-out brawl. Like Sky said, it was Samara. The guy she was fighting was wearing a black beanie mask.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. The guy lunged at Samara, growling as she swiftly evaded his attack, her fists raised, the fury of a demon flashing through her eyes. He threw a punch, which she quickly eluded by grabbing his fist with her left hand, pummeling him with three hard strikes to the face with her right.

Holy fuck.
