The guy staggered back from the blows then quickly reached behind him, pulling out a blade. Samara didn’t balk. She circled him, eyeing the knife, panting hard as she awaited her opponent to make his move. There was no presence of fear in her face, just the look of cold-blooded murder. An expression I was all too familiar with.

The guy struck first and swung his blade toward Samara’s face. She lunged back, sidestepping it, then grabbed his wrist, viciously twisting his arm. He screamed out as the blade fell from his hand and as Samara curled her other fist, she went for it. Her knuckles made contact. I heard the loud crunch of his nasal bone shatter.

I cringed, but I didn’t dare look away. I should’ve moved by now and jumped in to help her, but it was clear she didn’t need my help. As I adjusted my footing, I accidently stepped on a twig, snapping it. A hard gasp fled my mouth when Samara jerked her head in my direction, locking eyes with me.

Her breath staggered as she suffered a fatal blow to the face, the masked man striking her while her guard was down. Samara fell to the ground, stunned, her movement seized. She was out cold.

NO!

I took off, gunning straight for the masked fucker once he made to kneel down to snatch up the blade. I tackled him, grunting as we both crashed hard into the dirt. Luckily, I hobbled to my feet and reached the knife before the other guy did. When he was halfway to his knees, groaning out in pain, I twirled the weapon in my hand and jabbed it deep inside the fucker’s neck.

He never saw it coming.

“Samara!” I left the guy to die and quickly rushed to her side, dropping to my knees. Gently I brushed her hair out of her face and cradled her cheeks in my hands, lightly shaking her. “Samara, baby girl, please wake up.”

That punch she took split her bottom lip open. Blood oozed from the gash, trickling down her chin and neck. I called out her name again, brushing my thumbs across her skin in steady, gentle circles. A faint groan met the air. Her eyes tightly squeezed shut before finally they fluttered open.

“Rhett,” she moaned in pain, her breath ragged. “I’m gonna kill you.”

Beyond my control, I chuckled. Pressing my forehead to hers, I kissed her head, pulling back as she grumbled for me to get the fuck off of her.

Slowly I eased her up and helped her stand. She reached up to touch her mouth then released a painful hiss.

“You fucking dickhead.” Samara punched my arm then aggressively threw up her hands. “I had it under control.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to—”

“It’s whatever.”

I watched as she left my side and approached the dead body. Just for the hell of it, she kicked him and then gave him the finger. I laughed when she kicked him again and called him a bastard.

“Is Sky okay?” she asked me.

“Yeah, she’s fine. She should be back in her room now.”

“The guards by the gate were shot in the neck with a tranquilizer dart. I don’t know what happened to the others around campus but I’m sure they were hit too.”

I nodded, my jaw tightening at the info. “Who the fuck is this guy?”

“I don’t know.” Samara kneeled down closer to the body. “Let’s find out, shall we?”

She pulled the knife out his neck then tugged the beanie off his head, snorting as she took in his broken, lopsided nose and the blood smeared underneath it.

“Is it one of your guys?”

I shook my head. I’d never seen this man before. “No. Let’s flip him over and look for gang ink.”

We did just that and lifted the man’s black shirt up, removing it. And there it was, right there on his shoulder. A tattoo of the letter O with a bloody knife pierced through it.

“The Outlaws,” I growled as Samara cursed deeply, fury painted on her pretty face.

“GOD DAMNIT!” She huffed and rose to her full height, hastily kicking the ground, her fists curled tightly at her sides. “I should’ve fucking known this would happen.”

“What?” My brows furrowed. “What are talking about? Do you know the guy?”

“No.” She angrily ground her teeth, her blue eyes flitting into slits. “I don’t, but what I do know is that there have been kidnapping’s occurring in the Valley. So far, three girls are missing. They disappeared in Outlaw territory. Sky would’ve been the fourth if I hadn’t found her in time.”

“And you know this, how?” I skeptically wondered.
