Father was hovering over Finn, who was picking himself up from off the floor, groaning, his face saturated in blood. My father shook out his bloody hand as he whipped around to face me.

“Johnathon is dead,” he sneered, his eyes flashing. “And Finn here just let it fucking happen.”

“Wait, what? The fuck do you mean heletit happen?”

“It’s simple, Son. Johnathon was given a task to snatch a new prize to deliver to our comrades for the next Harvest. There’s a lake outside of campus and Finn was there waiting by the dock. He heard a commotion and instead of investigating, he just fucking sat there. Johnathon never returned and Finn hauled ass and left him behind.”

Fuck. My eyes damn near popped out the sockets as they slid over to Finn.

“So,” Father continued, “we’re going to make sure this doesn’t happen again.” He pulled out his gun, handing it over to me. “Kill him. Now.”

My heart fell deep in my stomach. He couldn’t be serious. “What?”

“Did I fucking stutter?”

“Aren’t you going to let him explain?”

“According to him, there’s nothing to explain. So, there’s nothing more left to say. Kill him, now, before I kill you right along with him for disobeying a direct order.”

My eyes darted back to Finn who pleaded for me not to shoot him. As he wiped away the blood caked around his mouth, he mouthed out a word while my father kept his eyes on me.

Samara.

My heart violently pounded harder as the truth rooted me in place.Heknew, which meant he must’ve saw everything. Finn knew it was Samara fighting Johnathon.

Fuck. Fuck. FUCK!

“Let me talk to him,” I pleaded with my father. “Maybe I can—”

Father cocked his weapon and aimed it at my head, his finger inching toward the trigger. My lips parted. I had my suspicions before, but I never thought it’d be true. This motherfucker was actually going to shoot me, his only son.

“It was the Ravagers,” Finn blurted aloud.

Father lowered his weapon then, his face turning a fatal shade of crimson as he arched his body to the side, facing Finn. “Excuse me?”

“I did go to investigate,” Finn admitted, his body shaking, as was mine. “But-But it was a Ravager fighting Johnathon. Rhett, I think. I wanted to intervene, Boss. I-I should’ve intervened, but if I had, then he would’ve seen me. I-I couldn’t take the risk of exposing myself and blowing our whole operation or worse, him killing me, so I left. Please, Boss, forgive me.”

Father’s jaw ticked as he considered Finn’s anguished plea. “Andwhywas a Ravager there?”

“That I don’t know, Boss. We did everything like you said. We were careful. I can only assume he must’ve been nearby when Johnathon snatched the girl.”

“I see.”

Father walked over to the couch and sank down, smirking as he observed his busted knuckles. “And was anyone else with him?”

“No, Boss,” Finn swore with a hard shake of his head. “I didn’t see anyone.”

Father nodded and in a swift motion, raised his gun, firing off a shot that sent Finn crashing down to the floor.

“NO!”

I rushed over to him and fell to my knees, my hands shaking as they reached out to touch his body.

A low groan met the air.

I cried out with outstanding relief as Finn cursed and tenderly rolled over on his back, his eyes tightly squeezed shut.

It was a fucking miracle. The bullet had grazed only the left side of his face, taking a huge chunk of skin. The wound was deep enough to leave him scarred for life.
