We file in, following them to the foyer. They stop before we reach the living room. Clearly, they aren’t offering us a seat.

I, too, would be suspicious if a group of random supernaturals showed up at my house. Especially after everything they’ve been through.

I sort through the scents in the room. There are six distinct scents. A mage, wolf shifter, demon, dark and light fae, and a hunter. Underneath it all, there’s another female’s scent here. It’s fainter than the others, but it’s a deliciously intoxicating mix of wild berries and eucalyptus. My mouth waters. She’s a vampire. Though I don’t have any vampire friends or enemies, they’re neutral demons to me; none have a scent quite like that.

“What do you want?” The demon in front of me asks harshly. He’s smothering his mate, draped around her.

“I am Aksel, this is Blaze, Griffyn and Felix. We are the Alpha Team for the Supernatural Special Forces. Our assignment involves you.”

“It involves us?” The demon asks.

“Yes. Would you introduce yourselves?” Aksel asks monotonously. The psychopath can’t just be normal. It seems to relate to how he was raised.

Nicoli raises an eyebrow. I’m surprised he plays along.

“I’m Nicoli. This is Jeremy, Jay, Kiran, Ajax, and our mate Aly.” He points to each of them as he says their names. At least I can stop referring to them as their species.

Aksel nods. “We have been assigned to the capture of the vampire Ryan. We believe you may have information that could be useful in the case.”

“We told the council every detail. Why don’t you have those if you’re working for them?” Nicoli asks suspiciously.

So, they didn’t ask for it to be redacted? Then why don’t we have that information? Something isn’t adding up here.

“It has been redacted from the file,” Griffyn tells them.

Aksel stiffens. He’s probably annoyed Griffyn gave up information like that.

“Well then, I’m not sure we can help you,” Jeremy declares. He starts to pull Aly away like we are done here, but none of the others move.

One of the twins speaks up, the light fae. I think it’s Ajax. “Perhaps someone on the council does not want Ryan found. It’s no secret that not everyone was happy with us claiming our mate.”

I wouldn’t have seen Aksel stiffen further if I didn’t know him so well. Everyone knows his dad was not a supporter of crossbreed mating.

Their pack thinks about it for a few minutes while staring at each other. It takes me an embarrassing amount of time to realize they’re using their pack bond to speak telepathically. As a shifter, I should expect it, but I don’t have a pack bond with my team, so it’s not second nature to me.

It would be incredibly intimate to share a bond like that with them. A commitment for life. We are far from close enough for that.

“My mate thinks we should tell you,” Nicoli finally speaks up. “When we realized that our fated mate is a hunter, we gained Ryan as an enemy. He wanted to kill Aly based on his own history. We told the council he was hunting us, and they took over from there. We were asked to stop searching for him ourselves, and we have.”

I feel they’re holding something back but we can’t call them out on it. They hold the advantage here.

“Thank you. It’s important we know all the facts if we are going to find him. It sounds like you want him captured as well,” Aksel says.

No one speaks up.

The dark fae, Kiran, keeps glaring at Aksel. As a fellow dark fae, I’m sure he has experience with the Lenoir family. I’ll have to ask Aksel why that seems to be a negative impression.

“Well, thanks for stopping by,” Kiran says, walking over to the door and opening it.

Clearly, it’s time for us to go. His pack backs him up, following him. Aksel leaves first, and Blaze and Griffyn follow. I pause by the door. People tend to be most comfortable with me.

“Could we stop by again if we need more information?” I ask. I shrug one shoulder, trying to look innocent.

I guess it works.

“Yes,” Aly says.

“But don’t just show up next time.” Nic snaps his fingers, and a piece of paper appears in my hand. It has a phone number on it; I’m assuming his.
