“It could be a coincidence,” Kiran points out.

“But why are they still here?” Jeremy growls.

Aly looks me over before pulling me into a hug. “Sorry this scared you. You should let someone stay with you at all times for protection until they’re gone. We can’t be sure of their motivations.”

But I can’t have that. I basically have a secret life from them.

“No, I can take care of myself. I’ve been training with Jeremy and practicing in my own time. I’m not a weak human anymore.” It sounds more like I’m trying to convince myself than them.

Aly gnaws on her lip, clearly not liking my answer. She’s about to say something when Jay comes to my defense.

“Anna is right. She can handle herself, and if she doesn’t want to be burdened with one of us at all times, then she doesn’t have to.”

I give him a tight smile in thanks.

“I don’t think they’re dangerous. Based on the emotions the twins sensed, they are genuine about trying to find Ryan. They said they’re the team assigned by the council,” Nic says.

“But one of them is Joka, the dark fae councilman’s son. We know he doesn’t like us, so we can’t put it past his son to feel the same,” Jeremy growls.

Which one is the dark fae? Have I met him yet?

“He didn’t even act like he knew who we were,” Kiran indicates him and Jax, “so there’s a chance they aren’t close.”

This conversation is a little hard to follow, but I know the twins’ parents weren’t treated well because they mixed races before it was acceptable.

“He’s always been a golden boy, the perfect son for a council member; I wouldn’t trust him even if I don’t think they’re dangerous,” Nic says, crossing his arms.

“Well, if they give you any problems, call one of us right away. I’ll be there in seconds,” Aly promises.

She’s too kind to me.

“Thank you.” I stand up and start heading toward the front door.

“Don’t go. Have dinner with us. I’m just about to start cooking,” Jay tells me.

He doesn’t take no for an answer, guiding me back to the couch before heading into the kitchen.

I stay, allowing myself to enjoy my time with people who truly care about me. And I stop thinking about smoky grey eyes and black hair.

Blaze and I are watching TV. There’s nothing on, so we’re channel surfing while we wait to hear from the others.

Aksel throws open the door to our room, stomping in with Griffyn behind him.

They’re clearly in bad moods. They don’t say a word to each other; they just stand there staring at us.

I decide to break the tension. I’ve never liked an awkward silence.

“How’d it go?” I ask.

“Tomorrow, we approach her and just ask her about Ryan. Then we leave and continue the mission with whatever information we have,” Aksel barks before leaving to go to his own room, slamming the door behind him.

Okay then.

“What the hell happened?” Blaze asks, staring at the door.
