“How?”

“Peter mentioned Gavin was taking you to Giovanni’s.”

Amber picked up the black dress and frowned.

“Go put it on.”

Amber didn’t have time to argue with her sister, so she went into the bathroom. After a quick shower, she held up the dress. It was strapless but had a bra built into it. She slipped it on. Oh my. The dress flowed over her body. This seemed a little too formal for dinner.

“Ruby…” Amber started moving out of the bedroom.

“Put these on.” Ruby held a pair of black stilettoes.

“Only if I want to break my neck.” Four-inch heels were too much for her. “Grab the one-inch ones out of my closet.”

“Spoil sport.” Ruby did as she was asked. Amber sat down to put them on. “Give me five minutes to freshen your makeup and do your hair.”

“I don’t need anything fancy.”

“I won’t.”

Amber blew out a breath and allowed her sister to do her thing. “Done.” Amber glanced in the mirror.

“It’s perfect.” She stood and hugged her sister.

“Listen, Gavin is a good guy. Not like your ex. Give him a chance.”

The doorbell rang before she could answer. Amber picked up her purse and walked to the front door. Her mouth dropped open.

“You’ll catch flies.” Gavin’s warm finger tapped her chin.

She swallowed. Damn, the suit fit his muscular form to perfection. “You look great.” He looked like he’d strolled out of a men’s fashion magazine.

“You are sexy as hell.” He leaned over and brushed a kiss on her lips. “Ready?”

“Yes.”

“You two have fun,” Ruby quipped. “And don’t do anything I wouldn’t.”

Gavin chuckled. “Knowing my brother, that isn’t much.” He slipped his arm around Amber’s waist and guided her to his vehicle. He helped her inside, and Amber saw his eyes widen when the split opened to reveal her thigh.

Giovanni’s was busy when they arrived, but they were escorted directly to a booth in the back. Once they were seated, Gavin ordered wine and picked up his menu. Amber tried to read hers, but nerves tumbled over in her gut.

“I need to say something before tonight goes too far.” She needed to get this out. She’d been thinking about it all day.

He lowered his menu. There was question in his blue eyes. She gnawed at her bottom lip; she didn’t want to hurt him.

“Tell me.” He reached over and placed his hand over hers on the table.

His warm touch seeped into her bones. “I want you to understand; I enjoy being with you.”

His features tightened as did his fingers around hers.

Amber took a deep breath, and the waiter came to the table with the wine. Gavin kept a hold of her hand as he sampled the wine and nodded his approval. The waiter smiled and poured. “Give us a few minutes,” Gavin said.

The waiter nodded and left. “Continue,” Gavin’s voice was devoid of all emotion.

“I enjoy being with you.” Amber winced; she was repeating herself. “We’re good together.”
