She glared at him. “I saw your face.”

“I was shocked, yes. You dropped a bombshell, and you expected me not to react?” He crossed his arms over his chest. “Then you run without a word?”

“It doesn’t matter.” She went lax in the cuffs.

“Tell me what happened.”

Amber closed her eyes, and Gavin thought she wasn’t going to say anything. “I was nineteen and stupid.”

“You’re not stupid.”

She gave a bitter laugh. “Not every man is like you and your brother.” She took a breath. “I trusted a man I shouldn’t have, and I ended up pregnant.”

“He wouldn’t take responsibility.” So the asshole took advantage of her. He curled his hands into fists.

“He told me it wasn’t his fault, but mine.”

“Asshole.”

“To say the least.” She turned her head and stared at him. Her blue eyes were devoid of emotion. “I’d started college; I didn’t know what to do. I was too young; my whole life was in front of me.”

“What did Ruby say?”

“She doesn’t know.”

Gavin sat forward. “You didn’t tell her?”

“How could I? She’s my big sister, and she was still dealing with our parents’ death. So I went to the local parenthood clinic and talked with them.”

“What did they say?”

“They were supportive and did a sonogram.” She glanced away and then back; there were tears in her eyes. “The pregnancy wasn’t viable.”

His breath caught in his throat.

“They told me the medical terms, but I was in shock. They told me an abortion was the only option in those situations.”

“You went through it all alone.” He shook his head. Gavin stood and unlocked the cuffs. “I’m so sorry.”

“It wasn’t your fault.” She lowered her arms but didn’t make a move to get off the bed. Maybe they were getting somewhere.

“No, but I wish I could have been there for you.”

She shook her head. “Will called me a baby killer.”

“If I ever see Will again, I’m going to deck him.” Gavin laid down next to her and gathered her into his arms. “You’re not a baby killer. You made a hard decision.”

She sniffled. “It was so hard, but they told me it was just a placenta and the sac; the baby never formed.”

“You did the right thing.” He tightened his arms around her. “Tell me about this low egg count thing?”

“A couple years ago, my period became super irregular, so I saw a doctor. They did some testing and found my egg count was very low for a woman my age. They didn’t know why. But it might be impossible to get pregnant.”

“Not an issue.”

She stared at him. “But your family…”

“My two brothers can have kids. Besides, we can adopt if you want. I’m not letting you go, sweetheart. We’ve got years ahead of us to figure this all out.” He needed her to know this was real. This was forever. “I mean it; I’m not letting you go.”
