“What you suggested. We let Will talk it up about how the Grangers are learning to fight. We always train every Saturday, or whatever day we decide, at your uncle’s place.”

“That puts a target on your backs—and you and Alex aren’t even Grangers,” Tawny said.

Liam held up a hand. “It’ll be a trap. We won’t be in our human form or in the barn.”

“So what? When you all charge out of the woods in your wolf form, do you think they’ll run away, or will they shoot you all?” Tawny looked over at Zach. “Tell them how you weren’t able to move once you were shot since the bullets were laced with some kind of sedative.”

Mason lifted his hand. “That might be it! If we can find out where they bought the sedative, we should be able to trace it back to them. When David operated on Zach, do we know what he did with the bullets?”

“No, but let’s hope he tested them for the kind of sedative given. That might lead us to these vigilantes,” Tawny said.

Zach pulled out his phone. “I’ll text David. He’s always working, so he might be in the middle of an operation and can’t answer. If he is, he'll text back when he has the chance.”

Mason handed him his phone. “Use this one.”

“You really do think they bugged everyone and everything,” Zach said.

“You can’t be too careful. I don’t know what kind of phone you have, but you should be able to find a spyware app that can tell if it was tapped or not.” Mason looked around. “You all should do it. I’ll find the link and send it to you all.”

Tawny wasn’t sure how long she could live like this.

Zach texted their cousin, but no telling when he would get back to them. She wasn’t sure David was even aware the bullets had been coated with something.

Mason stood. “I see I have a lot of research to do. I should go. Luckily, Tawny found me an assistant. I have a stakeout planned for tomorrow, so I think I’ll have Brad do that while I work on the computer and make some calls.” He lifted a finger. “Check your email tomorrow. The heading will be Mom’s birthday, which was months ago by the way. It will contain the links for you all.”

“Thanks,” Tawny said.

Ethan picked up his plate and stood. “I need to be heading out too. Seven o’clock rolls around early tomorrow morning.”

“What about my truck?” Zach asked. “Can I drive it?”

“Zach, remember you’re dead,” she said.

He waved a hand. “I meant afterward.”

“The truck was in a ditch, but so far it looks to be okay. It was hidden behind some scrub brush. They didn’t want anyone to find it, at least for a while. We were lucky a hiker spotted it. I was in the process of checking the integrity of the axels when the shooter came in. If everything checks out tomorrow as I suspect, I’ll let you know.”

“I want whoever did this,” Zach said.

She couldn’t blame him.

“By the way, do you have your truck key?” Ethan asked. “It will make testing the engine easier.”

“It’s in my backpack. Where did you guys put it?”

She shrugged. “I never saw any backpack.”

“Are you saying they stole that too?” Zach asked.

“How big was it?” Alex asked. “The bullets were several inches below your shoulder blades. The pack would have stopped them. Or did you take it off when you were speaking to these people?”

“No, but it was my medical kit pack, not my actual backpack. I put my truck key and wallet in there. Shit. I need them.”

That would be bad if they took it. “Maybe they tossed it.”

“Zach, Alex and I can look for it tomorrow. I remember where we found you.”

“I really appreciate it.”
