I can only imagine the shitshow we’re going to return to. Oakley knows something is going on, and I all but admitted to Fiona that I care about Reese.

God, I wish we could stay here, leave all the bullshit behind and just be together.

Reese is different in Saints Cross. He has to be, because society, his mum, and the Heirs expect him to be. They don’t see the side of him that I do.

It isn’t fair, yet I know nothing in life rarely is.

About thirty minutes outside of Saints Cross, my phone begins to vibrate.

Oak.

Dread plunks in my stomach but I ignore it, choosing to remain in ignorant bliss for as long as possible. But with every mile that passes, I can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong.

By the time I pull into our driveway and cut the engine, my hands are shaking.

Twelve missed calls, numerous voicemails, and texts from Oak, Charli, and Dad.

I don’t have a chance to read them before Oakley comes racing out of the house and storming toward me.

“Oak, what’s wrong?” I ask as I climb out of the car.

“Liv, thank fuck.” He pulls me into his arms.

“What’s going on?” Rearing back, I look my brother in the eye, his expression stormy and full of concern.

“You don’t know?”

“Know? Know what?”

Just as Oak opens his mouth to reply, the familiar rumble of Reese’s Subaru fills the air and my brother goes rigid.

“I’ll kill him, I’ll fucking kill him.”

“Oak, wait.” I try to grab him, but he’s too quick as he stalks over to Reese. “Oak, come on—”

“You motherfucker.” Oak smashes his fist into Reese’s face as he climbs out of his car, and I scream.

“Please, Oakley. Don’t do this. I… I love him. I’m in love with him.”

“What?” My brother’s eyes snap to mine, pure rage shining there. I’ve never seen him look so angry. “You love him? After everything he’s done to you? What the fuck is wrong with you?”

“It was a misunderstanding, Oak. It was all a big misunderstanding. We’ve talked it over and I—”

“There’s a video, Liv. Photos…”

The world goes quiet around me as I stare at my brother, trying to comprehend what he’s saying.

“N-no,” I whisper.

It isn’t possible. It isn’t—

But the expression on his face tells me it’s true.

“This piece of shit shared them to the school’s email system. Everyone in the registry received a link to them last night. If you’d have answered your phone, I would—”

“You released them?” I’m not looking at Oak now. I’m looking at Reese, who’s staring back at me, pale and bloody.

“No, Liv. No fucking way. I didn’t do that. I swear to God, it wasn’t me.”
