“I’m worried about you. He broke something inside you, didn’t he?”

Tears prick my eyes as I nod.

“Which means it was real.” Oak lets out a steady breath. “I didn’t want to believe it… but here we are.”

“Here we are.”

“Just a heads up,” he says. “Elliot says Reese can come back to the Chapel.”

“Fine by me. I just won’t be coming around anytime soon.”

“Liv, maybe—”

“I should get back to the girls.”

“Fine. But you can’t avoid him forever.”

I flash my brother a bitter smile. “Watch me.”

He rolls his eyes before heading downstairs.

But the second I make for my room, my resolve crumbles. Because I want to see Reese. I do. I’m just not sure I can trust anything that comes out of his mouth.

And if I can’t trust him, how can I ever forgive him?

“Inever thought I’d find myself in an Heir’s bedroom,” Tally says.

“You know I’m not actually an Heir, right?

She shrugs, rubbing her fingers over the photo on my desk of me, Oak, and the lads.

“Okay, the sister of an Heir.” She casts me a knowing glance, and I shake my head with silent laughter.

“If it makes you feel any better, I never imagined you would be here either.”

“How do you think I feel?” Abigail says. “I’m supposed to marry him.”

That kills the mood, the three of us falling into an awkward silence.

“Sorry,” Abigail adds. “I didn’t mean—”

“No, it’s okay. I guess all three of us have our reasons to be guarded.”

“Well, here’s to breaking the mould.” Tally grabs her can of pop and thrusts it in the air. “Something about this year feels different. Maybe it’s time for us girls to steal the Heirs’ crown and run All Hallows’.”

“God, can you imagine?” I stifle a laugh.

“Oh, I’m not sure I want that,” Abi murmurs. “I’m not good at being in the spotlight.”

“You’re better than you think.” I offer her a reassuring smile. “I know I’ve already said it, but thank you, for doing this. For coming here. I really do appreciate it.”

“We might not be friends, Liv. But I think we can all agree that we share a common hatred of Darcie Porter and her special brand of bitchery.”

“Here, here.” I raise my own can in the air and give Tally a small nod.

“So what do you think you’ll do to get revenge?” she asks, a devious glint in her eye.
