I wonder what she’d say if I told herCamdenis what happened.Probably help me plot—and execute—his murder. I grin at the fantasy.

The truth is, after I left Thorn Falls, I started to live my life on a day-to-day basis, worrying about the next thing in front of me, like making rent, paying for clothes, food, and here I am almost three months later, still a little lost.Part of me can’t believe I wasted the opportunity. Another part of me feels like taking on that much debt for college is just insane, and LACC is more logical. More at my level. There's nothing shameful about attending a good community college. It might not be what I hoped for, but it's okay.I can always transfer somewhere more prestigious in my second or third year—maybe post grad—after I’ve put some money aside. That’s reasonable.

I ignore Camden’s voice at the back of my mind.Mediocre.

I scan through the material for the next month, and repeat to myself that it is just fine, again and again.

My laptop beeps, and a new window flashes, indicating a call.

The camera of my shiny new phone is far superior, so I switch to the handheld device, press the green button, and grin into Willow's smiling face.

"Hey! Am I catching you at a good time?"

For the first time today, tension leaves my shoulders.

"Yeah, I'm just doing some reading for my classes.” And questioning why the hell I bother. I should drop English, take something else this year.

I don’t want to worry Willow, so I don’t tell her that. “How about you? How's New York treating you?”

She jumps into a full account of her day, not mincing her words about the bitches who don't leave her alone because of her hair, and her accent, and her grades.

I want to punch every single one of them. If we were back home together, I would have.

"Have you talked to Elle about it? Maybe you can switch schools if it’s that bad.”

“You know it'll always be like this for me. I'll always have red hair. I'll always have straight As. I'm not about to ruin my transcript for some cunts.”

I beam at the screen. "That's the spirit, hon.”

"How about you? How is that handsome Trent treating you?"

"He's fine." That's not fair; he’s more thanfine. I’m tired of describing everything in my life with that damn word. "He took me out last night. Pizza."

"Pizza!" she groans. "Morgan, you have to come see me, if only to try New York pizza. They sell heaven by the slice for one buck. You would never leave, I swear. I've put on ten pounds from pizza alone. How about your classes? Are they fun?"

"I wouldn't call either of them fun, but natural science has promises. English is boring."

"Of course you'd think so. You're such a robot."

"I don't mind books,” I protest. I actually do read a fair bit in my free time. “They just have to be entertaining."

No book in my curriculum is even remotely interesting, as was the case in high school.I expected as much, but taking English made sense anyway.

I don't have a specific idea about what I'd like to do with my life. Getting the general undergrad requirements out of the way now seemed like a good idea.

"Well, if you need help, I'm only a phone call away."

Others might have found it embarrassing for their soon-to-be fifteen-year-old little sister to help with their homework, but Willow’s crazy smart. I always knew that, but it was confirmed over the summer.

After passing some tests for her new school in New York, they moved her to sophomore year, skipping a year. If she’d attended a decent school in Thorn Falls, she would have been bumped to a higher grade a long time ago, but Thorn Falls West was a nightmare.

Math, computers, physics are natural to me. She's often discussed the rest with me.

"Same to you, sis. I'll come at Thanksgiving and kick the asses of all of the cunts in your school."

Elle invited me, and I’m saving up for the flight.

"Promise?"
