“Then why do you want me to leave?” I raise my hands in exasperation.

He pulls me back enough, so he’s looking at me. “I’ve been receiving threats.”

“Threats,” I whisper, “what kind?”

Cole almost laughs. “The bad kind, baby.”

I pull away from him and rub my hands up and down my arms. It’s a warm day, but I’m suddenly cold. “Why didn’t you tell me?” I turn to look at him, “You should have told me.” My voice cracks.

“I know that now. I’m sorry. That’s why I wanted you to go to Crystal Falls. I thought you’d be safer there. I can’t stand the thought of my actions placing your life in danger. If anything happened to you, it would kill me. It almost broke me, Kate, when you jumped out of the limo like that. I want you safe. When you got back, you said you wanted to go, and when you didn’t come to bed and I found you crying in the kitchen, I thought it was the end. I thought you were leaving me, that I had gone too far.” Cole’s jaw pulses, he knocks his cap off, running his fingers through his hair again, pulling at it. He takes two long steps and grabs my arm, yanking me the rest of the way to him.

I whimper into his chest, and my knees go weak. Cole holds me tight as my fear overtakes me. I remember the man from last night and shiver. I should have never gotten out of the limo.

“I love you. I let Olivia get to me. I thought you were tired of me. That maybe we jumped in too fast. But I don’t want to leave. Please don’t make me.”

“No, you’re not leaving. It would break me.”

“Even though I am such a burden?”

“God—no. Is that what you think? Never ever baby.”

“Yes,” I breathe. “I want your time, and I keep creating problems.”

“I’m so used to business first and then everything else. You are my priority, always. I set my phone to always take your calls. I will always be there for you first and foremost.”

Cole hitches me up on the hood of the Ferrari, pushing me down on it. He trails kisses up my neck, flicking his tongue out and swirling it around my hickies. “I wish I was sorry for this one,” he says, nipping at my neck and flicking his tongue out onto the hickey he gave me last night in the limo. “But you were being such a naughty girl last night. I had to remind myself you’re mine.” He hits a tender spot on my neck, and it sends delectable sensations shooting down my body, settling in my belly, and I react, my hips arching into Cole.

“Maybe the next time I’m so naughty, you can just spank me.”

Cole stops kissing my neck, his hold on my tightening. “Cookie,” he growls.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

After a few more minutes of making out, Cole helps me back into the Ferrari. As he’s doing up my seatbelt for me, my stomach rumbles. “I’m hungry.”

“Well then, I better feed you. Do you want anything in particular?”

I think for a minute. “A greasy hamburger with everything on it.”

“You got it, babe.” He pecks me on the mouth and then shuts the door. Now if I could only get him to say that about everything. But, nah—where would the fun in that be?

Cole pulls on to the main road. “Should we see how fast this bad boy can go?”

I give a nervous laugh. “Yeah, okay.”

“Hold on tight.”

When we merge onto I-15, I am sufficiently windblown. “I don’t think I’ll ever be the same after that. You’re crazy.”

“The joys of owning a sports car.” Cole smiles.

We stop at a drive-in burger place and pick up lunch. I notice people waving and honking as we pull around the drive through. “What’s wrong? Why do people keep honking and waving at us? Is there something wrong with the car?”

Cole laughs, taking my hand. “Cookie, we’re in a Fe-rra-ri.”

“So that doesn’t explain why they’re yelling at us. Maybe we should pull over and look at the car. Something must have happened when you were driving like a maniac.”

Cole lets his head fall, shaking it, still laughing.
