Nick started the car, peeled out of the parking lot, glancing in his mirrors while tapping a series of numbers into his console.

“What are you doing?”

“Getting us out of here,” Nick said.

“I don’t want to be here with you. I want to go home.”

Nick cursed as the traffic came to a stop in the downtown streets.

He drove into a drive-thru.

“I’m not hungry.”

“Neither am I.”

When it was their turn at the window, he drove away, breaks squealing.

“Where are we going?”

“Out of here. I need to make sure nobody is following us. I got this, okay?”

Her heart hammered in her chest. What was his plan? Was he actually taking her to her mom’s? But no, they seemed to be going in the opposite direction. God, she should learn geography better.

Nick made another sharp turn, a circle and then drove on through the tree-lined streets. “Nobody behind us,” Mulberry said.

“I know.”

A few minutes later, they pulled up to a sprawling estate with a pair of black iron gates with a styled “CB” in the centre.

He drove through the gates, past a small parking lot of a rectangular building and to the back. Turning off the car, he leaned over, placing a hand on her leg.

“You aren’t going anywhere, Mulberry.”

Her stomach knotted. He wanted it all.

He wanted to have the woman on the side and her.

“Not until I make sure it’s safe. Have you seen this woman before?” Nick flipped on the light in the car and showed her his phone.

It was the woman from the restaurant.

“Only at the restaurant where you kissed her.”

“I didn’t kiss her.”

“Yes, you did! I saw it.” Okay, it wasn’t quite a kiss but an intimate exchange.

Nick’s expression grew closed and pinched. “Look at the photo Mulberry.”

She took the phone from him and steadied the woman, a close-up picture. Her eyes were brown, her hair perfect, and a gold chain dangled from her throat.

“Doesn’t look familiar to me. Isn’t she one of your pieces of ass?”

Nick’s hands clenched into fists. “Get out of here.”

“Fine!” Mulberry said.

Nick slammed the car door, and she flung open her door.
