He propped the back door open.

“Where’s Logan anyways?” Nick wondered.

“Shut up and move this thing,” Erik said.

They should have had gloves, Nick thought, or rope.

Or an ox and cart.

They didn’t talk for a moment, carefully hefting the post through the backdoor onto the open flatbread.

“Perfect. Now I have to tie this sucker down. Len comes tomorrow to take it away, and I never have to see it again” Zee clapped them on the shoulder and jumped up on the flatbread.

Nick followed the other guys back into Club Bandit.

He leaned on the bar, staring at the stage.

How he wanted to have Mulberry on stage, as he promised.

“Are you coming to the New Year’s Eve bash?” Quinn asked.

“I don’t have a girl.”

Erik scoffed. “Yeah, you do. You just won’t go get her.”

“What am I supposed to do? Break into her house? I’m sure that will go over really well with her history.”

Quinn laughed, but Erik gave him his steely glare.

“That’s it, though, right? She has history. She’s probably spooked. This guy who was, like, a stand-in father for her in many ways ends up being the one behind the kidnapping? That’s a lot to scramble anyone’s head.”

He knew his friend was right. And he’d made those same points to himself, but when he woke up in the middle of the night, wondering if she was okay, wanting to reach out and touch her, the logic didn’t soothe his need for her.

Nothing would, other than holding her in his arms again, driving away her fears with his ruthless kisses, making her come so hard she fell apart.

He’d tried calling her. He’d tried emailing.

He had texted, and every communication went unanswered.

“I don’t love admitting that he’s right, but you got to tell her how you feel. And keep telling her until she believes you.” Quinn said.

Nick shook his head.

Quinn made it sound easy, but he had Simone, a whole life with the woman he loved.

Quinn’s phone chirped. “It’s Kayleigh. I wonder what mess she’s in now.”

“That’s your sister,” Erik mumbled.

Quinn turned away from them, barking into the phone.

Erik shook his head, murmuring that Quinn had to do a better job keeping his cool.

Before he could ask about Erik’s New Year plans, his phone flashed with Meera’s number.

“Hello Meera, is everything all right?”

“Not bad, Nick. Noodle has been adopted, and I wonder if you will drive him to his new home.”
